Costs of a Nanny

Hi there -

I live in the Boston area and we are thinking of hiring a nanny in the future.  We have one 15 month old, but our current option won't be viable for when we have two. .. it sort of isnt that viable now.  So I was wondering how much a nanny costs on a weekly / monthly basis.  It would be live out.  We are thinking about having number 2 but this is an absolute necessity before we entertain that!

 Thanks much!

Re: Costs of a Nanny

  • It completely varies by where you live, how much your nanny works, how many kids, on or off the books, how good your nanny is, how much they do in addition to childcare (cooking, cleaning), etc.  I live in NYC and the cost for 2 kids is probably in the range of $13-$25/hour depending on these factors and for 1 it is probably $12-$20/hour.

  • DC area for live out $15-$20/hour roughly, this should give you a good indication based on your area.
  • Thanks ladies - it definitely does help me a bit!  I figure it will cost about $2000 - $2400 per month based on that ... which is a bit more than now, but could be doable. Appreciate it!

  • If Live-in is an option you may want to entertain the idea of an Au-pair...no packing lunches either and the cost averages out to about $370/ wk ...

  • I'm also in a HCOL area, and I was a nanny 7 years ago while I attended grad school.  Back then, they paid me the salary of a first year teacher with a Bachelors degree (since I had one).  I made about $32,000, which worked out to about $650/week (before taxes).  They also gave me two weeks of paid vacation and (I think) $100/month towards health insurance.  This was for two children.

  • I pay 400$ a week for 2 infants.
  • In Boston I pay $18 per hour and that's middle of the range among friends.
  • 25 miles west of Boston, I pay $13 an hour cash for 2 kids, 30 hours a week.
