Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does anyone have a glass coffee table?

I'm eyeing a glass coffee table but am wondering if this is silly. I have an 8 month old who's just crawling so I really don't have a clue how a child is with glass. Anyone have a glass coffee table and doesn't have a problem with your toddler? TIA!

Re: Does anyone have a glass coffee table?

  • We have one in our basement so it's not used as much since were not down there all of the time.  Charlie tries to climb it but I just redirect her.  I had an unfortunate accident of her falling into an end table that is wooden and she had/has a terrible black eye from it so those were tossed to the curb asap.  I would think twice about getting something with sharp edges.

  • I have two glass/wood end tables.  I haven't had any problems with my girls with them, but I have also had to redirect a lot.  Now I think they have just given up lol.  I personally wouldn't get a glass only coffee table for fear that it would break.  I used to have one, and my cat jumped on it one day and it shattered.  I have no idea what that happened but it scared the crap out of me.
  • We had one but got rid of it. It was too dangerous and a huge pain. There were constant smears all over it. Friends and family didn't like having their children in the room with it either. No one could ever relax when small children were in the room because there was a constant fear that a child would fall and land on it or against it. It was more of a problem with the age group 2-6 years old when kids get a little more wild.
  • I have glass coffe and end tables, don't do it.  The fingerprints alone are just so much work to clean.  Between the two kids and being home I have to wipe them down on a daily basis.  It's a pita imo.
  • Sorry I'm not much help but we HAD all glass tables and sold them after I saw something on the Today show about how dangerous they can be. I was terrified DS would fall into them and it would break. I'm a little paranoid though.
  • We had a round, glass table, and it was fine. It was very thick glass, with beveled edges, and again, it was round, so there were no safety concerns here. It DID have smudges and fingerprints all the time, but oh well. We only got rid of it b/c we redid our kitchen and it didn't go w/the new look...
  • I saw the Today Show story about glass tables too and I took our glass table out of the family room because I am paranoid.  My DD is always trying to do something she shouldn't, I keep a very close eye on her and redirect,  but it only takes a second for an accident to happen.

  • Our dining room table and all of our living room tables have glass tops and it is the biggest pain in the a$$ to keep clean... I finally got rid of the coffee table (replaced it w/a storage ottoman to keep DD's toys in), and the end tables will be going out the door shortly as well.

Even if her hands aren't food-dirty, there are still greasy or sticky fingerprints all over everything. I feel like since it's glass, it shows more than it would on plain wood.

The dining room table thing is really getting to me though because I have to lift up the big glass piece to clean the food gunk that gets underneath... I cannot wait to get rid of that table.
