What do you consider a "large" tax return?

We just had our taxes done yesterday (ya, I know, romantic, eh?)...lol.

We are getting triple the amount that we normally get back! Probably because I have been laid off since April, so we aren't making as much as we have in years past. Plus, we are now paying Cobra, so we were able to write that off as a business expense. That really helped.

I'm thankful though. Of course we always put Preston's portion in his savings account. I figure we get the money back because of him anyway, so it should go to him.

  • Ours is unexpectedly bigger, but that's because we put central air into the house and got a tax credit.

    WOW!

  • I would consider anything over 7k a big refund... and a 5 figure-- omg. I'd shiit myself.
  • Anything more than paying in. Tongue Tied

So, are you going to do anything fun with your unexpected return?

We will take a small portion and put it into our travel fund, some will go into savings, some will go into Preston's savings, but, most of it will go towards paying on credit card bills. :-(

that is smart! We use our refund every year to pay off debt.

5 figure?  holy cow I would pass out.  We were shocked this year as well.  We got 7k and I thought that was huge.  That is with me working a $8/hr job, 3 kids and no income from DH.  (he hasnt worked in 3yrs)

Sadly ours is alreayd almost gone.  We paid a huge part of it to my mom for my van, bought the girls new carseasts, new bunk beds, paid some bills, savings, and my trip in Aug.  I wanted to save some for our Disney trip but it didnt happen.  Its not planned yet so its not a have to.  Maybe next year.

  • We usually buy something, then the rest goes into saving and is used as needed through the rest of the year.
  • More than $2K. We never get a refund, we adjust our withholdings so we usually end up owing a little.

this.  We'd rather not give out that interest-free loan :)

us too!  This year we're getting ~$5k and we're annoyed.  It's mostly because of reimbursement stuff from MH's new job being taxed pretty heavily, which we couldn't control, even with our withholdings.

  • Anything more than having to pay. I haven't gotten a refund since I married MH.
  • Anything over $1K...I hate when we over pay & get a big one at the end of the year.  This year we are getting back a lot ($5K) but that's because DH forgot to adjust for having another kid.  But the good part is, with that--we are actually under budget for the year--Yeah!

  • This year we got $6500 back and that's been our smallest return thus far. I think it's a pretty good amount!

  • I think anything over 1,000 is large. I really like getting a refund but, I never plan on it.

This.  Last year we got $1000 back.  That is the first time since 2000 that we have not owed.
