Babies: 9 - 12 Months

sleep training attempt=failure

Last night DS went to bed at 8:10 and woke up at 12 midnight. He cried a few times but not a consistent cry. He sleeps in our room in the pnp. I went downstairs to get DH. He was watching TV. ?We listened to DS wimper. After a few minutes, it turned into crying. DH went upstairs to get DS and try soothing him. It made it worse. DH walked DS to try and calm him. After he calmed him, he put him back in the pnp. That made DS cry more. This went on for about an hour. By 1:15 a.m., I couldn't take it anymore. I just nursed DS and he fell asleep. He woke up again at 5 am., I nursed him.?

?

DS is able to put himself to sleep for naps. So, I know he can do it. He stopped STTN at 6 months. He's been waking up 1-4 times a night in the last 7 weeks and I don't know what to do. Nursing is the only thing that calms him but doesn't put him to sleep like it did before.

?

What did we do wrong last night? With the exception of the nursing part?

What can I do to get rid of the night time feedings?

How do I know if he's really hungry or just needs comfort??

Re: sleep training attempt=failure

  • He's probably hungry!

Kai still gets up at least 3 times a night... I know if its hunger cause I have a letdown and can hear him swallow... if its just for comfort, I can tell cause he instantly falls back asleep...

I hear swallowing too. But, I can hear him swallowing when he's asleep too. He used to STTN from 8 weeks-the week he turned 6 months olds. ?

  • This happened to us at 4 months.  DD had been sleeping through the night and then all the sudden started waking anywhere from 3-7 times a night.  At her 7 month appointment, we talked to our pedi about sleep training.  He told us we could try a modified ferber method where we used increments of 5, 10, and 15 minutes.  At each interval we went in and patted her, told her it was ok, we love you, etc.  We did not pick her up.  He told us after the 15 minutes if she was still crying we could pick her up, rock her, calm her down, and start again.  We never had to repeat more than one cycle with her.  The key was putting her down while she was still partially awake so that she didn't wake up surprised to be in her crib.  After about 3 nights, she would cry for maybe 30 seconds to a minute and as soon as she rolled onto her belly, she was asleep for the night.  She is now sleeping from about 8 PM until 6 AM.  If she wakes up in the night, she can now put herself back to sleep.

If you are interested, I would recommend getting Dr. Ferber's book.  It made me feel better about what we were doing and it helped me understand why she was unable to soothe herself back to sleep.  I would only recommend this if you are okay with letting your LO cry it out for small amounts of time.  If you are opposed to it, it won't be good for either of you.  Good luck!

  • DD does not sleep well unless she is in her own room.  She sleeps in her crib with a radio on and that gives her a more constant noise level, when she wakes up she fusses for about a minute and puts herslef back to sleep.  If she sees me she goes from a little fussiness to full on crying.  I only go in to comfort her if she really cries.  Your LO may be sleeping better for naps because he doesn't see you right away when he wakes.

Any chance you want to move LO out of your room at night?

Technically LO can't see us when he wakes up. He's at the bottom of the pnp and my bed is really high. His room is downstairs and I don't feel comfy having him sleep downstairs alone. We have a humidifer that makes a lot of noise. ?
