Working Moms

part time moms and teachers

I was wondering what those of you whom work pt do, as in what is your career? I am a teacher and wish I cold go part time when a LO enters our lives, but can't think of a way to do it as a teacher.  Any ideas?  Plus I'm just plain curious as to what is out there pt.  Thanks so much for your advice and ideas.

Re: part time moms and teachers

  • Maybe work as a tutor or in a tutoring center?

  • I had a friend who job-shared. She and another mom taught a full-time class, but each only taught 3 days of the week. I don't know that it was great for the kids, but she loved it.

  • Can you job share?  The district I'm in isn't big on job sharing; however, I subbed in another district and there were several moms who job shared.

  • half the teachers in my district (okay..that's an exaggeration...but it's a lot) are part time. I teach hs so they work either the first half or second half of the day. Honestly, it doesn't seem like it's worth it to me because they end up missing their prep period and, in most cases, would only need to teach one more class to be full time.

teaching full time and being a mom isn't that bad! Don't stress!

  • I'm really one of the youngest people with most of the women having children in either high school or beyond so no job sharing for me :(  But it doesn't necessarily have to be in education was just curious what others do!

This!  Teaching is very family friendly.

  • I'm a part time school psychologist. We also have pt social workers, speech paths, and special ed teachers in my district.
  • I have a friend who is part-time kindergarten and part-time reading. We have every other day kindergarten.

  • I'm a residential counselor. I'm supposed to be only 30 hours a week but sometimes I do work 40+. Now my husband's a teacher and a (mostly) WAHD. He teaches online and he also does some subing the days I don't work.

  • I teach 1st grade full time amd I am trying to do the exact same thing. Do you have a Masters Degree? If so you can apply to teach at a college. I looked into online classes and evening classes that are once a week. Could you switch in the district and do something like reading recovery? Good luck!
  • I teach at a University, I am technically full time but only come in to work 3 days a week, I teach 3 classes a semester and have to be to teach those classes and for some meetings.  I also have a 9 month contract, so i have my summers off!
  • I am a physical therapist that works for a school system.  I work in early intervention, and work with special ed teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and paraeducators.  There are 65 women (and one man!) in my office, and I would say only 20% of us are full-time.  Everyone else works either 3 or 4 days a week.  So, if you are a teacher, could you get your special ed certification?  If your district works like mine, your pay grade gets increased if you further your education, and they reimburse up to nine graduate credits per year to help you continue your education.  It seems like if someone has more specialized training, they have an easier time going part-time.  Just a thought.  GL!

  • I'm a high school biology teacher.  There used to be a fair amount of part time hs and job share elementary teachers but with all of the budget drama they are trying to get rid of these arrangments and aren't allowing anymore.  I asked last year for 80% although I have heard it's better to just work 100, not that much more work, from those that have done it.  Of course I was denied.  For next year I asked for 60% or 80% although I'm sure I won't get it.  60% is teaching 3 classes instead of 5 and the minimum to receive full benefits.  I'm going to keep on asking but I don't want to switch schools.  There are some other sites that would allow me but are further from home.  I just look at the positives, 14 weeks off a year.
