Pregnant after a Loss

AW: Test Driving Cars Today... DH thinks I'm crazy...

we are going to test drive the short list of cars that my DH's parents have approved for us to pick for our "big baby gift"... it is an extravagant "gift" but they are buying and SUV, titling and insuring it in their names, and parking it our house to use to transport Harper in and do family things in.  We each have reliable work cars... but put a ton of miles on the.  I have a 2006 Acura that I bought in late 2006.. it has over 150k miles on it... DH drives all the time too.... almost 100k miles on an 08 bought at Christmas 2008....

they will "let" us drive it for three years and then trade it.   We have to agree to keep it super low in miles... just travelling with H and to visit them:)

Anywho... we are going to test drive things today... All Chevy, and Buick products....

What apparently makes me crazy is that I want to take the carseat/base with me...  I want to make sure that it fits and I can reach.  He is embarrassed by me and worries that it makes us look serious when we arent' going to buy it at our local lot... his parents are buying it from a friend in Tennessee... but I want to make sure we really like it.

Am I silly?  Should I just suck it up and trust that it will be fine....

  • I think you are totally reasonable! Why spend all that money on a car if it doesn't do what you need it to do?

  • Plus, if you don't act like you're serious about buying, no one at the dealership will give you the time of day. You can't let them know you aren't going to buy a car there.

  • I don't think that's silly at all.  When we were shopping for cars a couple of weeks ago, I saw a couple trying out their stroller in the trunks of different cars.  That kind of stuff is important!
  • That is a fantastic idea! I planned on going with the pnp and carseat/base and stroller to make sure everything fits Smile

  • DH and I both drive Chevy's right now. I have a 2007 Trailblazer and DH has an 09 Tahoe. We will be trading in my Trailblazer right after M is born (have to close on the house first) and when we go test driving in a few weeks we will be taking the car seat with us. I'm tempted to throw the stroller in to in order to make sure it's not to heavy to life in and out and it fits well.

  • Test drive a Hyundai Sanata Fe... I got the SE model. I'm going to get mine today and I love love love it!! It also gets the highest marks for safety which is super duper important with a baby on board.

My FIL has a good friend who has a Buick/GM/Chevy/CAdillac lot.  He buys all cars from there... because he gets them at cost.  I am only allowed to select their products or we don't get the "free" car.  soooo, those are the brands we are looking at:)

  • I work for a Chevy dealership....and I want an equinox or a traverse SOOO bad...you should definitly try those!
  • Your in-laws need to look up the definition of gift in the dictionary! That means no conditions! They sound like control freaks!

But aside from that I don't see why taking the carseat with you is silly, I would never have thought to do that but now I'm going to as we're about to look for a more baby friendly car for DH!

Oh and on the car side, if you're not just set on a SUV, I absolutely love my Chevy HHR!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You are not being silly. I think that is a great idea. You want to make sure that the car you will be using is going to work for you and the baby. You are being smart.

  • This is totally not crazy at all! I have a Toyota 4Runner and it was a really tight squeeze for DH if the carrier was behind him when he drove. He had to move the seat up when he got out so the carrier could be removed. Thankfully it's my car and he doesn't drive it much. His truck is horrible now with DS- he can only sit in the middle or the passenger has to eat the dashboard. I can't imagine even trying to put the infant carrier in there!

  • Not silly at all.  I took a dog crate to try out in cars when we were looking!  (I thought I was being "practical" by only taking the bigger crate, and not both of them!) I'm sure that looks much crazier than a car seat!

  • Doesn't sound crazy at all :)  You wanna make sure what you need to have with you, fits with the car you choose.  I really like my friend's Buick Rendezvous!  It fits her 2 carseats and son really well in the back seat!  And she says it gets great gas mileage and has tons of room in the back.  Just an idea...
