Another job offer ???

Oy!  This process is stressing me out.  I can't even remember the last update I posted about this.  I think I'd just gotten a low offer and was not going to take it.  I countered high and thought they would say thanks, but no thanks.  But, they didn't and eventually we worked out something everyone could be happy with.

told my boss this week and he asked if he could counter.  they offered me a very comparable package and current job is much closer to home/kids/etc.

the only problem I've really ever had with my job is my comp.  I am going to talk with my boss a bit more about this, but I have some reservations about taking their counter.  I just worry that they'll hold it against me sometime in the future.  Not that their spiteful or anything, but I just want to make sure it's not a knee jerk reaction, I guess.

Anyone have this happen and end up staying where they were?  Did it work out ok?

Re: Another job offer ???

  • I did a few years back, I was offered a job at a competitor for more $ and when I put in my notice my current job offered me more $. Not the same amount but enough to make it worthwhile since my current job was MUCH closer to home. I ended up staying for another year until leaving to finish college full time. They must really want you to stay if they offered more $, otherwise they'd just say goodbye.

  • Last year when I was pregnant and my company had financial troubles, I interviewed and got a good position at a stable company with a shorter commute, but I knew it would be really tough to come back from leave at the new job because it was a lot more intense and it was their year end close so it would be crazy.  I told my boss I was going to take the job and I was really surprised that he offered me something to stay - I told him I couldn't go another year without a bonus, so he gave me my bonus (which was $25k so a lot of money).  I ended up staying regardless because of complications with my pregnancy, I couldn't handle switching jobs.  But my boss gave me a check (I never had to bring it up) and never ever mentioned it again - even when I recently quit to take a new job (because the financial troubles never resolved and there was only so long I could work in limbo).  But my boss was a fantastic person and he would never be spiteful about something like that.  So for me, yes, it worked out fine.  I stayed and took the money, had a really easy transition back from maternity leave and still have a good relationship with my boss, even after quitting a year later.

Good luck - I think that whatever you decide, it will work out!  And it's awesome in this economy that you have two companies fighting over you.  You should be really proud of that - and go out and do some celebrating!!
