The saga of performance evaluation: WWBOTBD?

I posted the other day about my boss asking me to fill out an eval for him even though I'm his only direct report.  I was nervous so I went and talked to his boss who told me not to do it.  She told me that I could just talk to her about any problems I had with B (my boss).

So, I brought up (in other words) his passive aggressive behavior.  I mentioned that last year during my evaluation he thew a bunch of stuff in my face, even things he had told me all year that I had been doing great.  I cried during that meeting and heaven knows if he does it again I'll be a royal mess with these hormones.  So she told me that if I wanted we could have my meeting with her there also.  Or, B and I could meet and then go to her to 'settle' things. (These evals are important b/c they are directly tied to our bonuses).

Would you ask to have the first meeting with B's boss?  I don't want to act like I'm going above him all the time, and he does know he's a crappy manager to some extent so that probably wouldn't help his self-esteem.  But on the other hand last year's was AWFUL and I don't want a repeat.

  • Your boss's boss seems like a pretty resonable person. Would you be able to ask him to tell your boss that he wants to sit in on the meeting, without making it look like it was something you requested?

  • I can't believe your company does one-on-one evals. We're required to have a 3rd party sit in on evaluation meetings for the express purpose of preventing situations like this.

I'd absolutely request to have your boss's boss in on your review.

huh, I have never heard of having a 3rd party in an eval.

Ditto pp, see if your second tier manager can request to sit in on the meeting, rather than you having to ask for it.   If that isn't possible, I would see how the eval goes, and go to him/her if necessary.

  • Our company always has the two people above you in the eval. My boss is great, but its nice to have higher ups knowing you're doing a good job. I'd ask her to sit in on your eval.
