Babies: 0 - 3 Months

sleep sleep and more sleep...

I am kinda concerned about DS today. He will be 6 weeks on Saturday...

Last night I fed him at 10:30, he slept until 2, I fed him again, and he slept from 3-6:30...I fed him and he slept (though restlessly) until 10:45...then he was up happy and smiling for about 30 min, I fed him and he fell asleep again! I put him down thinking I could sneak in a quick shower, but he slept from about 11:30-2:30! Now I fed him again, and he fell back to sleep again, and is now sleeping soundly in my arms...

I called the nurse during the 11:30 nap to ask if this is normal, she said as long as he is eating and having dirty diapers (which he is) he might just be going through a growth spurt.  However, I didn't expect him to sleep AGAIN after this feeding...he definitely wakes up completely to eat, but then falls asleep immediately after...he woke himself up a few times, but just screamed (he does this sometimes when he gets tired) but as soon as I console him he is out again.  He is going on 17 hrs of complete sleep, other than feeding and those 30 min of play time earlier...

I am glad he is waking up to eat, but this concerns me...especially since all he did after this feeding was cry until he fell back to sleep (granted this was like 2 min). has anyone else LO's gone through a sleepy day like this? He has sleepy days before but nothing this constant...the kid cannot wake up!  Would you be concerned, or just go with it? Thanks for any advice...sorry if this is rambling...i am trying to explain it as clearly as possible :)

Re: sleep sleep and more sleep...

  • Just roll with it.  DS did the same thing the other day (and we're close in age).  I think it's the 6 week growth spurt.  FYI, for us, mixed in with a couple of sleepy days like that we had a couple of days where DS refused to nap all day and was really fussy.

  • My DS is 6 weeks today and he sleeps a ton, too. He is really only awake for like 1.5 hours at a time during the day and then he's out like a light. He wakes up to eat and then will be awake for about another 1.5 hours and then he's down for the count again for awhile. He also sleeps 3-4 hour stretches at night from like 9 pm until 9 a.m. I think it's normal....babies sleep a lot. Stimulation tires them out fast and ?they need to rest from all the sights and sounds around them.

  • I'm going through the same thing today.  DS will be 6 weeks old on Saturday and he has been sleeping pretty much all day.  He barely wakes up to eat, but is still finishing his bottle.  I hadn't thought about calling the pedi since he doesn't have a fever or anything.  I'm interested to see the responses you get since our LO's are the same age.
  • For us the 6 week growth spurt lasted about 1 week (and might still be going!) and consisted of about 2 days of fighting sleep and fussing constantly and 1 day of nonstop sleep.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  Enjoy it today because tomorrow may be terrible!

  • Thanks ladies...I feel SO relieved that I am not alone...I do know babies sleep a lot, and he does, but this is insane...he can't be overstimulated because he has not been up long enough to be stimulated in the first place ;)

I was just worried something was wrong with him...he is not acting sick but I keep thinking  dumb things, like did I hurt him somehow, like bump his head that I didn't realize, or who knows what...I have never seen him sleep this much before, plus half of this sleep is totally restless..he broke out of his swadding twice and his arms are flailing all over the place every now and again, and then he cries until I console him back to sleep..its like he needs to sleep but can't comfortably, then other times he will be completely out..I'll be curious to see if anyone else chimes in...thanks again!

  • I'm so glad you posted this question -- we are going through the same thing and Iwas getting worried (DS will be 6 weeks tomorrow).  Now I'll just wait for the constant fussiness that will probably follow!
  • Our LO sleeps ALL the time. He feeds every 4 hours, taking 4 ounces of formula with 1/4 tsp of rice cereal in each bottle. Most of the time he eats and falls straight to sleep. There might be one or two stretches where he wants to look around, but that's it. I've never really thought this was a problem; going to ask Monday when we go for his 1 month visit.....
