At first I only had the kit lens (Canon 18-55mm) and a telephoto that I use outdoors (55-250mm), so most of them have been with the kit lens. I think the Nascar pictures are the first ones I've taken with the 50mm 1.8. I LOVE it though. A lot of people say not to bother with the kit lens, but I like it as a starter wide angle lens. ::shrugs::
For portrait type work, you'll want a wide f-stop which is why I like the 50mm. The biggest problem with the kit lens is that it only goes down to f3.5 and that's at 18mm. If you want to zoom all the way to 55mm it only goes down to f5.6 so you're not going to get much background blur. I like it for when we go to the playground and stuff though. I need to be a little close to them so my telephoto doesn't zoom out far enough, but it's ok to have a higher f-stop because you're not really trying to blur out the background out there. I think it has its purpose. Yes you could get a much more expensive lens that would be even better for outdoor/close-up settings but I think the kit is a good place to start for that. I do however highly recommend getting a 50mm (either 1.8 which is pretty cheap but takes great photos, or there's the 1.4 and 1.2 but those are much more expensive).
Leslie, the 50mm 1.8, what brand is that? Canon or something else? Like you originally had, I just have the kit lens and the telephoto one. But I want a third "better" lens since I'm feeling the limitations of the kit lens now.

I have the Canon 50mm. It's only like $100 and well worth it for that price (since the 1.4 is several hundred more and I don't need to go that wide).
Re: Leslie, if you're here
