120 minutes

That's about how much sleep I got last night. Seriously.

I got a 45 minute stretch between his first wake up (right when I was coming to bed actually) & his second. I nursed again the second time & he was just restless & kept me up. Thinking maybe he wasn't really finished nursing, I tried to nurse again on the second side. Then he was fully awake.

Until 5:50. That's 5:50 a.m. DH tried to get him back down, then I would, then DH, then me again. Rocking, nursing, leaving in the crib for a sec to wind down, rocking more, leaving in the ARCS PNP for awhile longer, rocking/nursing more, on & on.

At 5:50 he finally gave in & slept for just under an hour & a half.

We've been in sleep regression mode for about a month now. Ari's always been a crappy sleeper anyway - we had about a month of okay sleep (waking 2-3 times to nurse) around 5 months of age after we thought we had a handle on the reflux & we had done a NCSS plan. Other than that it's been 8 months of crap sleep & getting worse. I'm getting to the point where "this too shall pass" is not cutting it. I'm totally at a loss as to what to do at this point though. Anything we've tried seems to either not work or backfire completely.

Re: 120 minutes

  • So sorry mama - that sounds truly miserable :-(  Is he teething or learning any new skills that could be causing the setbacks?

This might be a crazy idea but I wonder if you emailed Pantley or one of the other sleep folks if they might have some ideas since you seem to have a particularly rough case.

You poor thing!  i'm so sorry you're going through this.  It must be miserable!

Is he napping during the day?  How much total sleep is he getting in 24 hours?

He's actually been napping like a champ for the last month or so. He used to be a horrible napper too, but since he went down to 2 naps & a 2-3-4 schedule, most days he's getting 3-4 hours of nap sleep during the day. Some days he'll short one nap, but it's only once a week if that. Unfortunately I work so I can only nap w/ him on the weekends, & I can't nap after work b/c DH goes to school.

Nighttime he's going down around 8 (unless he's especially wakeful) & up for the day around 7-7:30. Unfortunately he's up every 30-60 minutes from 10:30 or so. I'm not expecting STTN. Really I'm not. I don't think it's unrealistic to want 2 nursings tops per night though. We tried having DH get up with him to try to cut back on the night nursing & that was a total fail. I think it actually backfired & he's been totally reverse cycling the last few nights.

He's been milestone a minute for a few weeks, so I'm sure that & the usual sleep regression at this age is compounding the problem. If it was just that I'd take more of a "this too shall pass" attitude, but he's sleep has been super sh!tty (normal for him) or super duper sh!tty (during growth spurts, milestones, etc) since day one. It's been affecting my mood & ability to keep up @ work since I got off mat leave. It's been affecting my marriage now too.

I think part of the problem is just b/c of all the reflux & allergy issues he had. It's just set up a pattern for not being able to sleep.

Maybe I will email Pantely. I've reread NCSS recently & there's really not anything we haven't tried from that or Dr. Sears.

  • So so sorry.  I have no advice as I think you've tried everything under the sun.

  • My DS got bad around 8.5/9 months and at 10 months we started NCSS.  We also moved him out of our bed which helped as well.  The biggest thing?  I moved away from allowing reverse cycling.  We started offering food/bottle every hour during wake times.  We also started doing more activities during the wake times, so that he was burning excess energy during the day, rather than being restless at night.

Do you know if your recent diet change has affected your supply?
