need help, when did you switch?

my ds is 15 mo old and if he's not chewing on his crib, he's getting his legs stuck (they are all bruised), or trying to climb out and looks like he's getting close to succeeding. we have the davinci kalani convertible crib.

the regular bumper we took out a long time ago. the breathable one that fits to the tops of the crib attaches with velcro and he just tears it off. if i did a shorter breathable style, he'd just try to step on it to climb out.

my question...when did you convert to the toddler bed? i hate to do it because he's still a needy little guy at night and doesn't sleep that great- at the same time, i'm sick of these crib issues. is it way too early to switch?
