Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Disturbing incident at DD's daycare

It actually has 2 parts:

Part I
DD got moved into a new class a few months back that I was NOT happy about.? Initially, it was just because they moved her to a different class from the kids she had been used to.? Then slowly, it became because within 2 weeks of starting that class DD had 3 incident reports, all of which involved other kids, and largely because the teachers were not doing a great job of watching them.? Well, they made some changes and all seemed o.k. until...

One day I walk in to drop her off, and this 17 month-old baby is crying on the floor with blood streaming from beside his eye.? I immediately alert the FOUR teachers who are all doing other stuff besides watching him.? It's clearly a "cut" and not a scratch and the blood is flowing.? I feltl so bad I called to check on him that afternoon (and to make sure my baby is not also headed to the ER).? One of the teachers told me that they reviewed the tape and he had tripped and hit his eye on the table, but just went to sit in the learning circle as if nothing happened, then started crying.? Ummmm...ok.

Part II
Today (weeks later), I see the mom, who I had never met before and asked how he was, because (thankfully and understandably) he is now in another class.? Not only did they try and cover it up by not telling her about it (luckily the teacher I'm friendly with saw her on the street on her way in and told her), but they would not show her the tape and did not tell her everything that happened. ?Luckily he didn't need stitches (they used surgical tape) but I felt so bad for the little guy

  • how could they "cover it up" if he had surgical tape on his face??    secondly, why arent a) reporting this place to anyone and everyone and b) getting  your LO the F out of there asap?
  • Surprise  wow.  that is no-good-very-bad-shady shitt!  is it the whole center or this one class?  wtf?  i'd be livid.

They put a bandaid over it.? Surgical tape was applied at the hospital.? I just found out how they tried to cover it up today.? One day, DD had a mysterious bruise under her eye.? We could not figure out if it happened at school or at home, because she is fairly accident-prone, but the teachers insisted it didn't happen there.? ?I'm starting to think that it did and they didn't tell us, but I have no proof.? The issue is not so much the daycare, as I think this set of teachers and this particular class.? DD has 2 more months and seems to be doing fine/learning/acclimated, but I may see about getting her moved out of there.? I'm definitely talking to the administrator tomorrow, however.

  • That's awful... It's make me concerned about what they are or are not doing with my own child's safety. Indifferent

  • I would definitely pull her.  2 months is too long when they're being so cavalier with these babies and are hiding things!  Not worth it, IMO.

I'm telling you, this was a far cry from a bite.? A little baby, sitting on the floor bleeding--bawling--and no one had even noticed!!!? The teacher that was supposed to be watching him was leading circle time singing songs.? Look, I understand, the ratio is 5 to 1 (which I think is too high) and there were 20 kids to 4 teachers.? I don't ever imagine no accidents are ever going to happen, but you seriously have to call into question the ethics of a place that would let something like that go down.? I'm just not sure how accurately the teachers reported it to the administration at this point.? One of the administrators daughters in IN the class (the only reason, really, G stayed in there from before).
  • OMG! I would never take her back there!

  • that sounds like some 20/20 sh!t right there. I feel so bad for that little boy to just go sit down and cry with his bleeding eye. It hurts my heart.

  • I used to be a daycare teacher.  Some of these posts that I open up, I know already that I'm going to roll my eyes at the poster.  It's usually someone saying that the daycare teacher neglected their child because they got bit, or they were allowed to play outside in 40 degree weather, or something else like that.

But this is definitely something that is logical to complain about.

I would talk to the director.  And I would tell them that you will remove your child if action is not taken with these teachers.  Those teachers should be fired or at least separated.  I've actually seen really good things happen when a group of bad teachers is split up and they are individually put with a group of good teachers.

But anymore than one bad teacher in a room is a disaster waiting to happen.

There's honestly, probably nothing that you could report them to the state over.  Although they might make a surprise visit and that might help.  But if the teachers were trying to cover up an injury, they'd probably cover things up for their licenser.

Seriously, talk to the director.  It could make a huge difference.  If it doesn't, I think you need to take your LO out of there.

And I don't think 5:1 is too high (for kids over 16 months).  But I do think 20:4 is.  If that makes sense.  There's a big difference between 10:2 and 20:4.  That would be just insane.  Especially if there are three teachers talking in a group while there are 16 kids running around on their own.

I appreciate your perspective.? And I agree about the difference between 5:1 and 20:4.? I have to say, though, the teachers were all engaged in various activities (diaper changing, feeding, circle time) when this occured.? I had previously talked to the assistant administrator with the daughter in DD's class and at that point, there was an issue with how the class was set up (blind spots, nothing engaging the kids to move around the centers) and when they changed things up, not only did it look better, but the chaos was greatly lessened and DD stopped grabbing my legs to prevent me from leaving her there.??

But, this happened after the improvements, and now, having talked to the mom, I am more concerned about the handling than the fact that it happened.
  • Well, that's good that they just weren't off in their own world.  And I was always really shocked that changing the room around could make such big differences.

I also am weird about cameras and can KIND OF understand why they didn't want to show them.  We had a parent who really wanted us to install cameras and have it on a password-protected site that parents could look at from work.  I know some places do that.  But I always thought it was a huge violation of privacy for the other kids.  All of the incident reports are centered around not saying who the "other kid" was, but if we had cameras, you could see it yourself.

But the fact that it was just this one kid, and if there was nothing else they didn't want other parents to see (an incident with another child or something), I would think they would want to show it.

That's just weird that they tried to cover it up.  That would make me so uncomfortable.  It just makes them look guilty of something.

  • I would def have an issue with that. DS had some scratches on his face the looked like he just scratched himself hard with his own nails. They were gone the next day, but when I picked DS up they told me they put it in his file just in case.
