I'm a teacher and since having DS it seems that I miss at least one day a month, which I never used to do. So far, I missed once in Oct and 1 Dec for DS and in Jan because I was sick. Now, I may have to take off tomorrow. It doesn't sound like a lot, but in Dec. I had a few short days (2) and feel guilty because we have break next week.
It is not like this can wait as DS's doctor said that he should be brought in due to his white, pasty poop. DH might be able to take him, but then I will feel guilty for not being with him. If they need lots of tests, I will leave work.
DS always comes first and I have changed since having DS: stay at school longer, less extras, miss days every now and then. I have the sick days so it is not that issue, it is just missing planning periods and sub plans, student behavior (I teach 5th), etc.
I feel guilt already and nothing has happened yet.
Re: Teachers: How many days a month or year do you miss?
I don't miss many, maybe 1 or 2 a year. DH usually takes time off if DD has to stay home as he gets more sick/personal time.
I don't think the amount of time you've taken off is excessive by any means. I have a few coworkers with LOs who used their leave (10 days) by Winter Break. I know how hard it is to miss work, but it's not like you are being wasteful with the days, they are necessary.
I went back to work October 19 and I've missed 5 days already since then (2 when DS was sick, 2 when I was sick with a nasty stomach bug, and 1 for a follow-up appt. with DS's neurosurgeon).
I feel soooo guilty.
