s/o wipes: has anyone heard/done this?

We changed pedi's and went for DD's 18month visit last week.  She was giving me advice on how to do things and such.  She told me that I should take a wipe, rinse it, wring it and then use it to wipe her.  Doesn't that defeat the purpose of buying regular wipes?  I took everything she said with a grain of salt but this one was interesting to me.  She also insisted I use the original Desitin because it's the best.  Overall, I really like her and felt really comfortable talking to her and such.

  • my pedi told me to just use cloth wipes/wash cloth if dd ever got a rash b/c the wipe solution can irritate sensitive skin, but that seems dumb to do that to a wipe.

  • Yes, that defeats the purpose IMO. Is your child having rash issues? If so, that was probably her solution for you to be able to use wipes instead of homemade wipes/clothes/etc.

  • Never heard that before - unless the wipe is dried out.

Have to agree on original Desitin though - always works for us!

  • I've never heard that about the wipes.  But I have heard that about the Original Desitin.  It's the only one I've ever used.  A friend of mine (with two kids) told me that.

  • When DS had really bad diaper rash, that's what we did and it helped a lot! FWIW - our pedi doesn't like wipes AT ALL. He wants us to wipe DS' bottom with plain ol' tissue.  His reasoning is that adults don't use wet wipes after a BM... but of course, our butts aren't in diapers where the BM gets all over our cheeks!

She was a little red at the time.  I found that Boudreaux's and Desitin, the only ones I have used, don't work all that well for her.  I had to get a prescription ointment from the last pedi for when they were bad.

  • That's wierd to do with a wipe.  I would just use a wet wash cloth for pee dipes and still use the wipes maybe followed by a wet washcloth to rinse off the wipe residue for a poop dipe, if you are worried about irritation when she has a rash.  We also use sensitive/frangrance free wipes.  Huggies.

I hate desitin, never worked for us.  We use A and D (the gold one-original) and love it!

  • I only do this when DS has a diaper rash.  It's less irritating.  I recently tried the Desitin Extra Strength (purple) and it cleared the rash up overnight! The regular strength doesn't work well on DS, though.

  • I would only do that for when DS had a bad rash (he hasn't had many).  But I did that when I worked in daycare and kids would have nasty rashes.

To do that all the time seems pointless to me.

And I swear by A&D.  We have never used anything else and he's only had a few rashes.

When we went to Italy, a bus driver was telling us that he thought Americans are really gross for not washing their butts. We only wipe them with dry tissue. We wouldn't do that with our hands after using the bathroom, right? If there's ever a wet-wipes-for-adults revolution, I may just join.

On the other hand, I have a co-worker from India who said in poorer areas, they don't have toilet paper, just their hands. So, I guess it could be worse!

  • Butt Paste made my DD scream :( I love regualr Destin it works great for us.I never heard that about the wipes. Maybe it just softens them up more?
  • I've never heard of that for wipes.  Maybe buy ones that are marked for sensitive skin?

I like old school A&D way better than Desitin Embarrassed

This is what we do all the time, although I don't wipe after every pee. Wipes are a great convenience when there's a nasty poo, but they are definitely not good for the skin.

  • our NICU used disposable cotton wash clothes and water to clean up after a diaper. they said it is best for sensitive skin.

There are wet-wipes-for-adults, by Cottonelle, Charmin and Scott.  Plus, they are flushable.
