Would you keep giving antibiotics??

DS has had a bad cough for 6 days and yesterday I took him to the Pedi who said it wasnt terrible but he gave him antibiotics (Amoxicilin) to prevent it from getting worse ( plus Im really really sick as well ).

But we've only been giving him it for 1 day 3 doses in total and hes got diarrhea. Should I give it a couple more days or stop and take him back to the pedi? The soonest we can see him is Wed.

Re: Would you keep giving antibiotics??

  • Diarrhea is a common side effect of antibiotics. I would call your pedi and let them know what is going on. You don't want to stop antibiotics early because that can cause a resistance to the antibiotic if your LO was ever to need it again.

  • I would call the pedi and see what they say.

You could try probiotics in a bottle (just add the powder to FF or BM) and that might help.

  • We are both on Amoxicillin too, and on the bottle it said that a side effect can be diarrhea.  We just make sure we change her often and put cream on her bum so it doesn't get red.

  • Yes, I would continue to give him the antibiotics until I spoke to his pedi.  In the meantime, I would put diaper rash cream on his bottom with every diaper change to keep it from getting chafed.

  • How bad is the diarrhea? I would just feed him more frequently to prevent dehydration and keep up with the meds. So long as he doesn't have a rash or difficulty breathing.

BTW, DD is on day 7 of amox. and she had diarrhea for the first 3 days too.

Its not terrible, just really runny and hes only had 2 more BM's than normal. He usually has 1-2/day and hes had 4 today. He doesnt seem bothered and is eating like normal. But I didnt know if it was normal for this antibiotic.

Did your DD's go away after day 3 all by itself?
