Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

what do you do about hitting?

My little guy has been hitting me more and more lately, he is only 13 months and mainly does it when he is tired/upset. I try to say "no hitting" and then show him how to be gentle, but he ends up just hitting again, sometimes he will hit himself too. Anybody deal with this? How do you correct? TIA

Re: what do you do about hitting?

  • I try just ignoring the behavior completely to show DS he won't get a reaction from it and he stops. When he gets older though I will explain to him that he can't, I don't think he gets it right now

  • I usually grab his hands and say "no hitting." If I am holding him I will put him down and ignore him for awhile. I think every toddler goes through this stage and there isn't really any "discipline" that would work at this age.

  • I tell her to stop and redirect her attention elsewhere.

  • at that age i would ignore it.  ds did the same thing (to be playful) and after the third day he stopped.. making a big deal out of it that young just makes it worse... gl
