Talk to me about croup

DS woke up this morning with a weird cough.  Not quite the barking cough like croup, but a hollow cough like he had a sore throat.  It's really hard to explain.  He is acting fine and the cough didn't really seem to bother him.  He didn't have any breathing issues either.  I did send him to daycare and they haven't called yet so I'm assuming it got better.

But, does croup come on rather quickly?  If so, then I don't think he is getting croup but rather maybe a sore throat from coughing?  And he didn't even cough much last night.  I didn't hear him coughing until about 6 am this morning.

  • Croup usually starts in the middle of the night and has a barking sound to it.

  • DD has croup right now, we were in the ER last night for 4 hours. Hers started with a hoarse voice and barley any cough, but her breathing got steadily worse yesterday evening. She started getting hoarse on Friday night/Saturday morning, was a little worse Sunday morning but then really started getting worse after about 3pm on Sunday.

I would just keep an eye on him and pay attention to his breathing. They say you can help the cough with cold air (going outside) and sitting in the bathroom running a hot steamy shower. HTH and hope your LO feels better!
