I am getting induced on wed but going in tues night for cytotec (I guess its oral?) Last time I was also induced but they inserted cervadil vaginally the day before (which BTW did NOTHING) Anyone have experience with cytotec vs cervadil?
I've been taking Bradley Childbirth classes and have heard some terrible things about Cytotec. It's actually an ulcer medication and can cause uterine rupture when used as a cervical ripening agent. The one you should be using is Cervadil. This is what I found online. I don't want to scare you, but I would not take Cytotec and would ask for cervadil instead.
CYTOTEC (MISOPROSTOL) ADMINISTRATION TO WOMEN WHO ARE PREGNANT CAN CAUSE ABORTION, PREMATURE BIRTH, OR BIRTH DEFECTS. UTERINE RUPTURE HAS BEEN REPORTED WHEN CYTOTEC WAS ADMINISTERED IN PREGNANT WOMEN TO INDUCE LABOR OR TO INDUCE ABORTION BEYOND THE EIGHTH WEEK OF PREGNANCY (see also PRECAUTIONS and Labor And Delivery) CYTOTEC SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN BY PREGNANT WOMEN TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ULCERS INDUCED BY NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAIDs) (see CONTRAINDICATIONS, WARNINGS, and PRECAUTIONS)
I had cytotec (vaginally) with DD. It did nothing to progress only cause her distress and result in a C-section. Which may have ended up being a good thing since her cord was wrapped around her neck 2x's. I guess it ended up being a blessing that the cytotec didn't work??? Good luck, I have heard mixed reviews.
The makers of cytotec specifically say that they will not seek FDA approval for it to be used to induce labor, because they are afraid of the sideffects - and the ensuing lawsuits that they would have to deal with. Doesn't that say it all?
The label of the drug specifically says it is not to be used in pregnant women because it may cause abortion. The drug is part of the drug combo termed the "abortion pill".
I was given cytotec vaginally when I was induced with DD1. My water broke shortly afterwards (although the doctor and nurse seemed to think it was spontaneous and unrelated to the cytotec), and the contractions became unbearable; whether that was due to my water breaking or the cytotec, I don't know.
I would assume that your doctor might be trying cytotec this time since the cervadil didn't work last time, but if you have concerns, I would call to ask why s/he chose cytotec this time before you go in for your induction.
