My neighbor is Korean and when she come over she removes her shoes outside. DH asked her about it once and she said "You dirty American's wear your dirty shoes everywhere." Now...don't go jumping on her case. She wasn't being mean and it was actually very funny when she said it. It is inconvenient, but she is RIGHT. Shoes are dirty and you should take them off to keep your house cleaner. We don't, but we should.
Well what about the pp who said that someone's dc died from having a piece of gravel stuck in her throat from a guest's snowy boots? We don't ask people to remove shoes, but I can also understand and respect people's wishes who would prefer for us to remove our shoes. I actually don't mind it, because I'm super comfy in my sock and/or slippers.
#3- I don't want your shoe marks on my nice hard wood floors
#4- So I am guessing that when its raining and snowing its okay to let them walk right in and get your floors soaked?
So yes, my house, my rules. Just because I invtie you to my house does not mean that I have to bend over backwards to make you happy and if I invited you over the least you can do is take your shoes off.

Agreed. I hate the fact that people require you to take your shoes off....I will wipe my feet and if I'm muddy, they will come off. However, why do I have to run around in my socks at your holiday party?! My shoes are cute. My pants drag on the ground and dust your dirty dang floor that your dog has run around on. By the way, did your dog wipe his butt and wash his paws after coming in from outside? Enough said!
If it's raining, snowing, muddy outside-- shoes need to either come off, or at least be wiped off on the mat (if smelly feet apply..lol). No way will I let someone stomp through my house with mud on their shoes.

omg. that is such an extreme situation. the chances of that happening are like one in a million. if someone used that as an excuse in front of me i would think they were crazy.

I 1,000,000% agree with this! I cannot EVER imagine asking a guest to take off his/her shoes when coming into my house. It would never cross my mind! Even if s/he tracked in mud, I'd steamvac when s/he left. My house is not a shrine or a museum, it's a home, and I want you to be comfortable while you're there. Some people don't like to be barefoot - I don't. I always wear slippers around my house b/c the floors are cold.
I would feel very uncomfortable if I went to someone's house and they insisted I take off my shoes. I'd be like, "Can I sit on the couch? Can I use your bathroom? Will you follow behind me with a dust mop and toilet brush?"
I agree with you- seasonally. In the summer/fall, I am perfectly happy to have my guest keep their shoes on. I couldnt care less. But in the rainy, muddy spring and the snowy, slushy winter? I'd be PISSED if someone decided it was remotely appropriate to keep their shoes (or more likely, boots) on in my house after they trudged through the rain or snow to get to my door. Now, if someone wears boots and BRINGS shoes to wear, that's totally cool.
So yes, my house, my rules. Just because I invtie you to my house does not mean that I have to bend over backwards to make you happy and if I invited you over the least you can do is take your shoes off.
you must have great parties!
I do and my guest are actually more relaxed because they can take their shoes off and relax a bit. they can put their feet up and not worry about getting dirt on the couch or the ottomans.

What is the worst thing that can happen if guests don't take off their shoes, track in a little dirt, maybe. Just clean it up when they leave. If your guests are bringing in something so disgusting on their shoes that it they don't take their shoes off it will ruin your floors/carpet, maybe it's time to find new friends.
Not going to lie- there are people I will not visit because I refuse to take my shoes off. I had (notice the past tense) a friend who carpooled with me occassionally, and she wouldn't let me move past her foyer unless I took my shoes off.
This is why I am a hermit.
And my dog does far more offensive things to my carpet than shoes ever will. This is why we own a steam cleaner.
1) i don't like removing my shoes b/c if i'm wearing heels or flats and don't have socks on, i really don't want to walk around your house in bare feet. how the heck to i know what's on your floor?
2) if i have a dinner party i'm going to be a fun/good host and allow everyone to wear their shoes - i know i spend just as much time picking out my shoes as i do my dress in instances like this. it would be such a disappointment to have to shed the center point of my whole outfit at the door.

It's so funny that you mention that! I know most people aren't, but I am so anal that my dog gets her paws wiped clean before she's allowed back in the house after going outside
However, at a holiday party I would never ask people to remove shoes. I'm talking having a few people over to watch a football game or something, not a bigger get together.
Wood floors, at least in my opinion, are SO different. I couldn't care less about shoes on those...they are so easy to clean, but carpet is different. I've read from several different sources that the area by your front door is the dirtiest in your house because of shoes and how many germs they carry so that freaks me out LOL

I'm not concerned about cleaning it up, or how dirty it might get -- I'm worried about the germs. The infectious disease doctor at the hospital where DS was admitted said dirty shoes on carpet for a crawler (and I know most people here have a walker, but I don't) is disgusting. Sure, maybe your kid won't get sick from crap dragged from outside, but I'm not willing to take that risk.
I think of it this way: would I let my DS crawl around on the floor of a public bathroom? No, so why would I walk though the house in the same shoes I wore in that public bathroom leaving the germs behind? Maybe when he's walking I'll feel different but until then...

No you won't!!! I certainly don't. They still sit on the floor and play, and my DD drops crackers or what not and picks them up, etc. It's still gross

I don't ask that anyone take their shoes off or leave them on. But when I go into someone's house, I ask what they would prefer that I do. I think that's polite.
My brother had a dog that is over 150 lbs and I just think it is funny that the dog gets full reign on the house, yet we have to take off our shoes. I actually just ignore the "funny" sign on the door and keep my shoes on. I don't know how they clean their wood floors; however, they are so dang slippery that we slide all over the place. My Mom about wiped out two years ago at their holiday party. DUMB! Don't have parties if you don't want to mop your floors afterwards!
Re: the "your house your rules" excuse is so obnoxious.
It pains me to do this...
HAHAHAHA you crack me up
So if you had just cleaned your WHOLE house soup to nuts & I came in with muddy boots on u wouldn't mind?
Cuz I'm headed over now with my Diva Cups for you. Oh and I'm bringing my dogs too mmkay? And we went for a walk in the park 1st.
we do naked fridays. this applies to everyone. if the mailman shows up on friday, he strips. end of story.
i am talking about every day normal weather/ shoes. come on~!

oh and my real response to this:
