Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Thinking about switching to cloth diapers

But I have a few questions:

Do any of you use the Bumgenius One size? If so, what other pieces do I need (liners, covers?)

For BF babies:

Their poop is so liquidy! How does that work out for cloth diapering?

 Thanks in advance!

Re: Thinking about switching to cloth diapers

  • BumGenius 3.0 one size comes with everything you need - each diaper comes with 2 inserts, so you're good.

On top of diapers, you'll want to get a wet bag or 2 and we just use a lidded trashcan to toss them in. You need CD friendly detergent (Crunchy Clean, Allen's Naturally, Charlie's Soap, etc) and CD friendly diaper cream, if needed.

We have a mixture of BG 3.0s, Happy Heiny's One Size, FuzziBunz Sized, and NuBunz.

DD is EBF and we have never had a poop leak (or any leak) with CDs. The good thing about BF poop is it is water soluble, so you can just toss the poopy dipe into the wet bag without needing to rinse or scrape or anything first.

  • Loading the player...
  • No need to buy any other pieces except what pp said about pail liners, soap, etc.

I use BG onesize for my DD and we NEVER had any leaks with her bf poop, as opposed to the mulitple blowouts in disposables. and again like pp said washing bf poop is simple, just toss them in the wash, poop & all!

  • We love the Bumgenius One Size. They are so easy to use and we've never had a leak with them - even with the runny BF poo. The inserts come with them. The only other thing you may need is a pail liner for your diaper pail. I would suggest a Wahmies or Planet Wise one. you should also use a cloth diaper friendly detergent to wash them in. Pick one from this list - https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoicesataglancepspd.htm

Be sure not to use zinc-based rash creams with the cloth diapers (they don't wash out. CA Baby rash cream is great and cloth diaper friendly. The fols on the Eco-Friendly board are super helpful with all of these questions.

  • I was going to do Bum Genius, but bought a few used of those and the fuzzi bunz, and decided i liked the fuzzi bunz better.

If you are still not 100% sure, look online for "rentals" or "trials". I know Sunshine Diapers, and a few other stores, do trials so you can try a few different types and that gives you a chance to decide if you want to do CD at all, and which kind you like the best.

We did a "newborn rental" and then sent those back and upgraded to what we have now.

And the cloth mostly absorbs the poo when it's that liquidy, which  makes CD very easy. you don't have to do anything but throw them in the wash with all the others.

  • BG is one of the types of diapers I use.  It comes with basically everything you need - insert, doubler, etc.  I bought some hemp inserts as the diapers weren't absorbing enough for overnight for us

If you are BFing exclusively, no need to do anything with poop.  Just dump it in the laundry.

You will want some accessories.  Probably 2 pail liners and a couple of wet bags.

I like the wet bags from monkey foot designs

ETA:  We use lots of kinds of diapers.  You might also check out Fuzzi Bunz one size.  For diaper cream we like California Baby and we use Planet detergent

  • I agree with all of the above. This is the list I used for the detergent

we have a mixture of diapers. I found this worked best for figuring out what works best for DD. We have BG 3.0, haute pockets, fuzzi bunz, sposoeasy, and some cheap ones from kawaii. I have 1 wet bag that i keep in the diaper bag and just use a trash can to store the dirty diapers. I wash them once every other day. I haven't had any leaks.
