Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

ok, so if you use a gun for "protection", riddle me this

where do you keep it that it is easy access in case someone breaks in?  will you say "hold on a minute kind sir while I open this safe up!"

wouldn't it make more sense to just a freaking alarm system?  seems kinda paranoid android if you ask me!

  • Well I am not a gun owner nor have I ever lived in a house with a gun or will that being said the rights that give you the option of starting drama and asking ridiculous things repeatedly also are written so people have the option of being gun owners.

Why is this so important to you?

  • Loading the player...
  • i too would like to know this.  how can you keep a gun locked up with ammunition somewhere else for protection?  you must be one fast @$$ loader if this works for you.

  • We don't have guns here but my parents do. They don't have kiddos around the house though so they do have 1 hand gun in their night stand I believe. Then they have the others in their safe (for shooting range stuff, etc).

I feel like Burglar Alarms are a good deterrent but definitely not something that it used to be. Remember when the alarms would send a police officer to your house instead of routing a call to the alarm company? I get why they do it like that but it's not what it used to be.

I'm assuming most people have a hand gun in a carrying locked case in their night stand. They hear something and they pull it out/unlock it and go investigate.

  • the gun safe is under my bed, bolted down to the floor ...its fingerprint to get in...walla!
  • Large safe in the basement for long guns - unloaded .... Small safe in our bedrooom - hidden for the hand gun...

We have that too. And, no, it's not paranoid. It's being prepared. The cops don't instantly arrive when your alarm goes off.

Guns are kept in safes. It takes *maybe* 10-20 seconds to get the gun out.

This is why I have a sword.  It doesn't need reloading.  (mostly joking).  I've also got this antique cast iron piece of a horse harness that would make a damn effective mace.

  • We do have an alarm as a deterent. At night, both of our guns are in our respective night stands. We lock them in the safe in the morning. We have pretty elaborate game plans laid out in the event that someone were to break in. We were actually having a conversation last night about having "drills". I am well aware that we are super paranoid (it's more me), but God help anyone that breaks into our house.

  • We have a finger print safe in the bedroom.  It takes all of 2 seconds to open.
  • we have an alarm too. h was in swat, so yes, he can load a gun in less time it would take you to get out of bed.
  • i can think of a lot of recent stories on the news where burglers were held at gun point by homeowners til the cops came. One was like an 85 yr old woman lol! good for her.

  • also alarm systems are great and all if you aren't home and sometimes they serve as a deterrent.  But generally a thief will hear an alarm and know they have at least 10 minutes until the police show up.  So that gives them 10 minutes to get whatever they can.

we also have a GSD that I think would harm you before a gun would hehe he's trained to protect the little one

I'm guessing you have very little experience with guns. It literally take me less than two seconds to load my clip, pull back the action, and have a round off.

Isn't it true that most home invaders are not packing heat?  Because if they're caught while they're armed it's a much higher sentence than if they're not?  Or is that a myth?

  • Our loaded gun is on top of the armoire in our bedroom.  The armoire is immoveable (sturdy), and very high - there's no way DD could reach.  We have an alarm system, but after it took cops 45 minutes to get to our house when we accidentally tripped it, I don't rely on that for anything other than something to make the person robbing us/our house a little bit nervous.

If someone comes into our home uninvited, they will meet our Glock.

  • We keep ours on the top self of our closet. My DH's dad keeps it in a safe in his night stand and unloncks the safe every night before he goes to bed then locks it when he wakes up. It's not hard.

Im not sure but our home security installer told us most home invasions take place in the early morning because if caught it's not a felony charge as it would be if done at night.

  • i don't really understand it either, but whatever works.  i guess if it makes you feel better and as long as you kid can't shoot him/herself then whatever.

maybe i'm naive but i hardly spend my days worrying about a potential bugler.  i have an alarm system and recently my dad accidentally dialed 911 (have not idea how that happened) and the cops were there in 2 minutes.  literally.  ::shrug::

WTF? Seriously? Why would it matter what time someone broke in as far as a felony? I wonder what defines "early morning". Light out? After 6am?

I live in Chicago, and I don't have a gun. I was wondering the same thing. I would think that the city would be a hell of a lot more dangerous than Texas.

That's a pile of crap. Burglary/breaking and entering/etc. felonies whether you do them at noon or at midnight. Some areas may have an additional charge they can add for a night offense, or it might be upgraded to a more serious felony, like being charged with a hate crime instead of just assault, both of which are felonies.

But yes, you can definitely get a more serious charge for carrying a weapon. And many areas have three-strikes gun laws.

Bad people exist everywhere - even in quaint suburbia.

I don't know, VV, the idea of a potential bugler freaks me the heII out.

If someone broke into my house, came into my bedroom and started blowing Reveille on his tin horn? I'd drop over dead.

  • lol Andrewsgal. I live in NJ. nuff said.

DH has two rifles that he keeps in the bedroom on  a gun rack. They are too high up for DD to get to them. They aren't loaded either. If they where they'd be locked up.

Well yes, I realize this. But I would think a break in would be far more likely here than where you are, KWIM?

I felt 100% more safe living in a rural area than living in an urban one, and I even have a police station only a few blocks away. I do not feel safe here at all.

  • I'll also add that criminals don't rob from the poor like in Robin Hood. They usually go to the suburbs to do it.

Ditto, Kel. I live in the middle of nowhere, and we usually don't even lock the door, let alone prepare for an armed force to storm the gates. Heck, half the time, I leave my purse and wallet in my unlocked car.

I look at it like this.  I don't have a crystal ball.  I'm not sure if my house will be cased and picked for a robbery or if I'll live the rest of my life without ever having to use my gun for protection.  Criminals aren't predictable.  I can sit here and choose to believe that by living in a nice neighborhood in a nice area of town that I'm immune, but I don't think it works that way.  Good people in good areas of town are robbed every single day.  If I have the ability to protect myself, my family and my home, I will.  Sure, crime happens in more populated areas (like Chicago), but it happens everywhere, and to close your mind to that is naive.
