Babies: 3 - 6 Months

putting LO to bed later ?

We start DD's bedtime routine anywhere between 6-7pm.  I'm now seeing that she regularly gets about 10 hours of sleep and is up around 530-6am every day!  This is okay during the week because I work, but on weekends this sucks!  Especially when DH is working the majority of them.  Do you think putting her to bed later will help?  It may be a stupid question but how would I do this?  We originally started the routine that early about a month ago because she was miserablly tired when dinner time came around.

Re: putting LO to bed later ?

  • Actually when we put Henry to bed later he gets up earlier.  He is a 6am riser as well.

  • We typically start the bedtime routine at 7:30 and have him down by 8:20, but last night we didn't get home until 9:30 and put him down at 10 and he only slept 30 minutes longer than normal.  Didn't seem to make much difference. :(
  • We did a little research on this. We used to put LO to bed around 8:00, and she was a BEAR for the last hour or more.

Apparently, babies circadian rhythm makes them tired between 5 and 7. So, that's the optimum time to get their bedtime started.

When we pushed her bedtime to 8:30 for a while, in hopes that she'd wake up later than 4:45 am, she actually started to get up earlier (4:15 - WIDE awake!). We switched her bedtime earlier (7pm), and now she sleeps until 5:30 most days.

So - I say go against what's logical, put her to bed a bit earlier, and see if it helps. Give it a week before you change it up again :)
