8 Months Pregnant and Laid-Off

I was recently laid off from my current company after 6+ years of service.  I am currently in my 8th month and I am looking forward to delivery.

Since the lay-off my company has provided employees the chance to interview for other open positions internally.

I have posted, and I have interviews scheduled back to back next week.  However, I am very concerned about whether I would be considered for these positions in my current state.

Should I just withdraw from the interviews, or interview for the position and explain the circumstances?  There is a possiblity that my time home with baby would be limited due to any potential job offer.

So in short do I continue to search for a job now, which I will eventually need for me and LO.  Or do I take the break and regroup afterward.

  • I would interview just to keep all your options open. You may find a hiring manager that is willing to wait to bring you on after your ML and it is for a position you'd like or you might be able to negotiate coming back PT or something else. This may actually work out for the better for you.

What did they give you insurance-wise?

They cannot eliminate you from consideration due to your pregnancy.  It's not legal for them to do so.

I would plow forward with interviews and with your jobsearch, as much as you are able to focus on it.  (I'm 8 months too, and would find this really hard, but...)  I would think it's easier to interview now than after LO arrives.

  • I would interview.  They will be saving 2 months salary if they give you unpaid leave in one of the open positions and keeping an already trained employee - it's a value!
  • If the company is covered under the FMLA or state law, if you take another position, I would think you would be able to take FMLA if you are otherwise eligible.  Not sure though.  I would definitely interview anyway in any event.
  • I agree with the others-- interview and see what happens.  You never know what kind of offer they will make before you decide you don't want it and if you don't get it, you are no worse off than if you had withdrawn.

BTW-- I was laid off at 36w, just after I was eligible for disability but didn't take it.  It sucks and I was so worried about what would happen or if I'd even want to go back.  It all worked out really well-- I started looking when DD was 3m and went back when DD was 4m.  She started daycare the same day I started my new job.  Plus, I hated my old job and LOVE my new one.  Just wanted to give you a positive story!  I'm sure it will all work out.

  • I'm sorry - that sucks.  I agree with pps to interview - you have nothing to lose.  Ridiculous that you have to interview post-layoff - would have been more useful to you and the company to do this internally earlier (unless these opportunities really just opened up).
  • The company is taking care of me as far as the insurance goes.  I do have a nice severance package.  However, that will only carryme out into the summer.  I have gone on the interviews, and I am currently awaiting callbacks on a few of them.  i have already had the second interviews for them, and they look promissing.  So please keep us in prayer.  I don't want to go back to work though until LO is at least one month old.
  • Good luck!  I think it's definitely smart to keep interviewing.
