Since being pregnant have you...

Re: Since being pregnant have you...

  • I had a few drinks at a wedding a few days after we had conceived.  Obviously I didn't know I was pregnant yet.  Since BFP, I haven't had anything to drink.  I know some women do and feel really comfortable with it.  I'm choosing not to drink because I don't enjoy drinking all that much and it isn't worth the risk to the baby.  I don't judge if you do though!

  • No, but I'm practically a teetotaler anyway.
  • I got some fresh eye rolls for you too MrsEricH. How bout you try being a preggo SAHM to a terrorist toddler boy with no help from family, no babysitters, no daycare - then get back to me on whether you take such a hard line on the desire to relax with the occasional glass of wine?

As others have pointed out, in Europe complete abstinence isn't expected. A candid doc will tell you that a small amount of alcohol isn't harmful, but because the cut off point is hard to quantify there isn't an agreed upon safe amount to recommend and some folks have no sense. It is common practice for docs to tell mama-to-bes to have a glass of wine to help them relax if they have to have amnio, are having intense braxton-hicks, want to know if they are truly in labor, etc.

That being said, I had a half glass of red wine 2 or 3 times after the 1st tri on special occasions during my first preg and will likely do the same this time. DS came out healthy as a horse, cute as a button and smart as a whip. So far this preg I have had 1 glass of red wine - at 20 weeks when we found we were having a girl!

I have had a few sips of wine, but for some reason it just doesn't taste "right" to me right now.  I personally see nothing wrong with an occasional small glass of wine or beer...

This - I had about a half a glass of wine at a friends place with dinner, her Hubby is a distributor and has the good stuff, but it just didn't taste right to me.  I wasn't a beer drinker before, so I don't miss that at all.  What I really miss is a delicous Gin & Tonic with lime...and I wouldn't touch hard alcohol while pregnant.

  • No, just the occasional sip of something if DH is drinking something that looks good to me.

  • I haven't and probably won't. I wish I could and don't judge if others do but it's just, for me, one of those completely avoidable no-nos. Mostly, because when not pg, I hardly drink AT ALL so I recognize it as simply a craving, a thing I want because I "can't" have it. kwim?
  • I have not had any alcohol, but I will have a bit of DH's diet coke when we're out at restaurants.

  • I had a small sip of DH's wine the other night.  It tasted funny, kinda like before I developed my wine palate.

Knowing that it doesn't taste right makes it less appealing.  I do enjoy a n/a beer on occasion.

  • I haven't had anything alcoholic since BFP...simply because I have not had any cravings for it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a glass or two every now and then.

I'll be the bad mommy here!!!  Yes, I have had a few glasses of wine... did so with my last also.  In my doctors opinion, it is perfectly safe to have a glass, (once a night if I wanted).  As he stated, in most countries it is perfectly normal to have wine through a pregnancy and it is not looked down on -- but as he also stated, you cannot tell some women you can have a glass a night, because in turn it would become 2 or 3.  I have had maybe 3 since getting pregnant.  Yes, call me a bad mommy, shun me, look down on me -- etc etc etc.  It is a personal choice....

    I'm with you!

Me too! My doctor also said it was ok to have a glass of wine occasionally, but I dont think I have had an actual full glass at any given time since I found out I was preggers in early September. I did sip champagne at 2 close friend's wedding in October and November, and may have sipped some wine on Rosh Hashannah, but definitely no full glasses. I actually havent had ANY alcohol whatsoever since 20 weeks because its a blood thinner and I have had some bleeding since then. In my third trimester I may have a glass here and there, but I havent really even been in the mood for it so we'll see. I dont see anything wrong with having a glass here and there if you doc okays it, and definitely dont think anyone should be judged when they are following a doctor's advice!

  • I'm at 14 weeks and will be in Italy in a couple of weeks. I saw my doctor today who kept telling me, "Just a little bit of wine is okay [gesturing about an inch of a wine glass]." I didn't even ask (didn't really plan on having any), but she kept saying that. So, I'm not going to worry about a sip here or there. If I wasn't such an anxious person, I'd probably have a glass here or there toward the end of pregnancy. I'm obviously not there yet, but I doubt I will. I'd probably just obsess about it and feel guilty, and that's just not worth it to me. It is not because I think it is wrong or super-frightening. I do really miss my beer...oh well.
