When I go back to work, I'll start a 4-day work week (10 1/2 hrs a day). I'm nervous about this because my commute is 45 mins. That's just over 12 hrs away from my little girl 4 days a week. Has anyone else done this? Do you think it's worth all of the time apart to have that one extra day home with her?
Re: Anyone work a 4 day / 10.5-hrs a day work week?
To cover a 30 min lunch break... we have to clock out for lunch!
I have a 3 month trial period. Hopefully it goes well & they let me keep it!!
Well, non kid related, I did a 4 day work week once a month for awhile at my old job. Personalyl- I found it hard. I was more tired those days and got a lot less done at home. I ended up wasting a lot of my day off sleeping and catching up on stuff I couldn't get done the other 4 days.
Then loop in possibly not seeing DS at all? (based on his sleep schedule) Or seeing him very briefly? I dont' know if I could do that 4 days every single week.

I did for a while and then switched to a 9/80 (every other Monday off). The 10.5 hour days are too long and even though I don't have a commute, I prefer being home at an earlier time daily.
That said - I LOVE my 9/80 because I get tons of stuff done on my day off with the boys in daycare all day. Yep, I send them. It cuts down on everything we would normally do on the weekends - groceries, errands, housecleaning, laundry, etc.
I'm doing 4/9's for my first 6 weeks back (I'm in week 2) now and then I'll go up to 4/10's. Thur. is my day off and DH stays home with DD Tuesdays. She is in d.c. MWF. It's only been 2 weeks, but so far it is working out well. My commute is less than 10 min., though, so even on my 10 hour days I will be home just a little after 5:30. I feed DD at 5:30 a.m., put her back to sleep and then get ready for work. I'm at work by 7. DH does d.c. drop off/pick up.
It is hard on nights when DD goes to bed at 7:30, b/c then I don't get much time with her, but most nights she goes to bed around 9. Having the whole day with her Thur is worth it.
So far my coworkers don't seem to mind the change in my sked, but I am the only one in our building (who I know of) doing a flex sked, so I hope that I'll be allowed to continue.
GL!
I was supposed to do that exact same thing, with commute and all, but when i was 30 weeks pregnant my company changed its policy. I absolutely think the long days away would be worth having an entire extra day at home. Good luck!
My real advice is, enjoy your maternity leave and don't worry about work at all. It took me a few weeks after I had DD to really put work on the back burner... wish I had done so earlier! Enjoy your beautiful baby!
I would LOVE to switch to this. The company I worked for previously had "summer hours" where they did this and it was great (prior to DD). This would be an ideal situation for me.
I also worked for a company that allowed 4 10's with every friday off during the summer. Most of us worked 60-80 hours a week anyway (pubic accounting), so it wasn't hard to make 40 hours in 4 days - but it was hard to get away from working on Fridays. So glad I don't work there anymore!
Both my husband and I work 4 days to help with childcare. I work 4 10 hour days and he works 4 8 hour days. I love my day off with my DD. I did initally work 5 8 hours days when she was born, but after a year I asked to switched to 4 10 hour days. It was the best move I could make.
My husband takes care of bath and dinner and I come home and play with her for an hour before bed. I also play with her for an hour in the morning before leaving for work. But I have three days a week with her. Working PT would be ideal, but is not an option at this point.
I worked 4 10's with a 45 min commute pre-baby. I liked it, but most of the time I'd sleep half of the day away on my day off.
I don't think I could do it anymore, I'm really tired after my 8.5 hr day & drive.
I may be able to start working from home in the coming months, and then I would possibly consider doing it again, but most likely I'll flex my schedule to work 5 days, but only part of the day on fri's.
I work 3 - 12 hour shifts in a row. Every Fri, Sat, and Sun. When I leave in the morning I probably see DS for 15 min and then he's asleep when I get home. Flip side, I play and have him all to myself Mon-Thursday. Works for me at this time.
