when to change nipple flow?

Hi All -?

I have a quesiton about when to change nipple flow. I seem to be having an issue with the nipples on my avent bottles and I am not sure if DS just needs the next flow.

We use the avent bottles and have moved to #2 which is the 2 holes and is still considered slow flow (1+mo)

Lately when DS is taking the bottles the formula stops coming out. Almost like it is clogged. Usually if I turn it upside down and sometimes pinch the nipple it will go back to dripping. But I hold it upside down and there is nothing coming out.

This happens sporadically throughout a feeding. It happens with mutliple ones too - so I know its not the nipple itself. They are clean and nothing looks like it is in the way. There doesn't appear to be clumps of formula either.

Could he need the next step up? What is he doing that is causing this....??Most of the time when this happens he gets very frustrated. Is he "chewing" on the nipple and causing the hole to not release anything???

?We used the #1 til I stopped BF and then I switched to #2 but maybe we really need #3? THe #3 has 3 holes and is considered Medium Flow (3+mo)

Thanks in advance.

Re: when to change nipple flow?

  • I switch when it starts taking forever for LO to finish a feeding and/or about the time of the age marking on the next stage.  If #3 says 3mos+, in your case I would switch to #3 and see how it goes.
