If you were lactose intolerant before you got prego, could/did you eat dairy while pregnant, and if so, lose (most of) the intolerance, and then become hyper-intolerant after giving birth?
I was only mildly intolerant before getting prego, and knew which dairy products to avoid.. when I was pregnant, only huge quantities of dairy (or dairy queen ice cream) gave me any issues... but now it seems like almost EVERYTHING with a bit of dairy in it is making me run to the bathroom (tmi, sorry)... including stuff I used to be able to eat without a problem... anyone else got this problem?
Re: Lactose Intolerant Mommies
I did notice that my intolerance went down a bit and I could get away with a bit more. I take Lactaid often so I do eat dairy quite a bit still.
My guess is that it was because your digestive system in pg goes very slowly. So before, if I had an episode, it would be bad but fast. In pg, it would take longer but not be so uncomfortable.
Lactose intolerance is when your body stops producing lactase so it can't break down lactose - milk sugars. Once it stops or slows down it doesn't start back up again, so any difference you notice isn't from that.
Also, dunno if you knew, but cheddar (real, pure cheddar) has no lactose and it wont hurt you. I didn't believe it at first - but its true! So if you've been eating only cheddar then you might notice that you don't have an issue.
Oh, and lactose is linked to fat - so the creamier the dairy the worse it is for us and the thinner it is (like skim milk) the better for us.
