16 mth old still waking at night

My DS goes to bed easy.  We put him down awake at night time and for naps and he has no problem falling asleep on his own, but in the middle of the night he usually wakes once or twice and stands in his crib crying until we come in lay him back down and give him his paci.  Not sure why he wakes at night and doesn't put himself back to sleep.  Its like he's making sure we're still there.  Not sure if I need to let him CIO during the night, but he already knows how to put himself to sleep.  I'm hoping to get him sleeping straight through before this new little one arrives.  Any suggestions or anyone having the same experience?

my DD is the same age and she still does that sometimes. Pedi said it could be 2 things: 1. a night terror (no, they are not too young) and 2. a transition from a lighter sleep to a heavier sleep and they don't even realize they are awake and crying; at this age they may still be learning how to transition. I usually wait 5 mins and if she doesn't quite down then I go get her.

Sorry no advise but my DS does the same thing.  My DH goes in and gives him his paci and lays him down and he goes right back to sleep. I can't go in because he wants to nurse and will throw a fit.  Sometimes he will sleep through sometimes he will wake once or twice. We are just living with it because if we let him CIO then we will be up until he settles.  Half the time DH doesn't remember going in his room.

DS is 19.5 months and still doesn't sttn. He's just one of those kids. We're making it work the best we can.

We've got one of those, too.  He has never slept more than 2.5 hours at a time.  I am praying hard that he starts STTN before LO arrives in August.  Ugh.
