Help with Nursery Painting

Our nursery has been sitting vacant/used for storage since the last time we painted it.  So I originally didn't plan to paint it again.  But I keep looking at all of these beautifully painted nurseries that people post, and I'm just so jealous that our paint job is so---plain and light.  Its an ivory.  Do you ladies have any ideas for giving the paint job a bit more punch?  Or just giving the walls a more interesting look generally?  We're doing a cowboy/western room so I don't want blue or anything like that--I'd want shades of brown or ivory anyway.

Some photos of the room.  Note that the carpet is a darker brown shade, and the furniture is all dark (except for the very light fabric on the glider).  We are planning to paint the nightstand an antique red.

Re: Help with Nursery Painting

  • How about a stripe going around the middle? I dont' think your walls are bad really, the artwork you used is very cute and punches up the wall but if you want a little more I would do a brown stripe around chair rail height.

  • I couldn't paint our first nursery because we were in an apartment so I hung a lot of pictures. I'm really particular when it comes to design and I didn't want a super babyish room so my theme was with color (pink, white and black) and I hung black and white family and pregnancy photos in really nice frames. After my daughter was born we replaced some of the photos with ones of her. It was really cute, had plenty of color but not too much, everyone loved it, and I didn't paint. I also had really beautiful crib bedding and drapes and had some throw rugs placed around the room as well. So it's possible to have a beautiful nursery without painting.
  • Maybe you should post this on the decorating board.

I like to visit places like hgtv.com/ratemyspace for ideas.  You can do so many things (chair rail, wall paper, stencil) or just pick out a shade of color you like a paint.  Sometimes Pottery Barn Kids has great color suggestions online and in their catalog.

I agree, your walls do need some color!

  • What about a wooden chair rail and/or a wall paper boarder in a western theme?

  • I think a brick red would look awesome (maybe on the bottom half with either a chair rail or a border halfway up?)  That might be more work than you're looking for right now, so what about a red stripe or two around the middle?  I get what you're saying about keeping it in brown tones and I like the look so far, but I just think a dark red would really add a lot.

    Looks great though, cute theme!

I like this idea! We ended up not painting our nursery b/c every color we picked out would have washed out the colors of the bedding instead of accenting it. So we've just been buying things to put in the room that help pull colors out & I think it looks really good!

    This.

  • I've actually been struggling with this because I've come to love the Behr Pot of Cream ivory shade on the walls in our future nursery! But I've also talked to a friend about painting a mural. So I may have her just do one wall.

In your case, though, why not leave the paint job mostly as it is, and add another piece or two of art? Maybe a wall sticker?

Another option might be a wallpaper border--maybe something like these:

I love the idea of a chair rail!  And I really like the idea of using a brick/antique red to vary up the colors in there a bit, esp. because our house is oak but I wanted the darker cherry/espresso for the nursery furniture.  Plus the brown is soo...monotonous!  I've got to sucker my husband into it though.  He's probably going to throw a fit about having to do that much work this late in the game.  If that doesn't work, the wallpaper and stripe ideas are great too.  Thanks ladies!
