1st Trimester

1st Prenatal This Morning!

So I went to the Health Clinic to have my first prenatal and they approved me for temporary medicaid (we faxed the paperwork for the real medicaid afterwards).  Woohoo!  I was kinda nervous about having to rely on government assistance for my prenatal care, but the ladies there were EXTREMELY helpful (except the receptionist; she couldn't absorb the fact that I am Puerto Rican and cannot speak spanish, so she just changed my race to "other", lol).

The nurse described everything that will happen on the visit and gave us a small tour of the facilities.  She then sat us down and asked questions about my medical history, our genetic histories, and about us in general.  We filled out a couple forms, signed some consent forms, and a nice lady came in and talked to us about breastfeeding.  After she left, the LNP came in and examined me, and was very gentle and nice.  And even though she said it was too early, she saw how eager we were to listen to the heart beat, and she tried to find it.  She didn't, but we were still happy she attempted.  Once we were done, they drew some blood for tests, and both of us received our H1N1 vaccines, they scheduled us for our next appointment, and we were done!  The whole thing took 3 hours.

Overall, it was a very pleasent experience, and although the U/S is scheduled for the 17th, we were very satisfied with our visit.  Please don't bash us because we are on government assistance.  I just wanted to share such a happy day with my fellow bumpladies!!!!!!!!!

So happy :)

  • I'm glad it went well. I wouldn't bash for being on government assistants. My SIL is on Medicaid since she is pregnant. She is also on WIC. DH and I were going to see if we could get WIC too as we do not make a lot of money but I guess we make $500 more than they allow to be accepted on the program.

  • 1st...congrats!  don't worry about what people say.  you are making sure that you get the care both you and the baby need so there should be no bashing.

2nd- you made me smile when you mentioned the receptionist.  I, too, am Puerto Rican and don't speak much Spanish.  have you experienced negative comments about that?  it's crazy how people are so passionate about a complete stranger not speaking Spanish.

lastly- your appointment seemed very thorough so you have a lot to be happy about.  good luck with your pregnancy! :)

  • OMG....when I told her I was PR, she gave me all my paperwork in spanish.  I told her I do not read NOR do I speak spanish, and she looked at me confused as hell.  She actually asked if I was sure I was PR!! She then asked if I wanted a translator. I told her, with no accent but a southern one, that I do not understand spanish, but I am PR, she went and changed my race on the comp and FINALLY my language to english.

So I am now an "other", lol.

Ugh....I can rant for DAYS on the negative comments I've recived in my lifetime!

  • Sounds like your appointment went well!  That's great news.  Big Smile

BTW, my DH is Puerto Rican too!   He speaks and writes in Spanish but told me a story of how he always got better grades in his English classes in high school than his Spanish classes.  I thought that was too cute.  haha

  • Congratulations , fellow Boriqua here, however i can speak the language! LOL, good luck !

Wait, let me make sure I understand this.. you spoke to her in ENGLISH and she handed you paperwork in Spanish and asked if you needed a translator???????? I would have asked her if SHE needed help and would have reported her to her sup.. obviously that was ridiculous !

  • Chuley,

What part of Puerto Rico are you from?  My DH is from Mayaguez.  We were there in November and plan on going back either late March or early April.  I love it there!
