1st Trimester

Sac only, no yolk nor baby at 5 weeks

I went to the Dr today and I thought I was 5 week 6 days gestation, I have been experiencing some light spotting. They did an internal u/s and all they saw was the sac, no yolk nor a baby yet. They drew some blood to check my hcg levels. Have another appt on thurs for more bloodwork and then again Fri for another u/s and to see the Dr. I am so scared and fear the worst. Has anyone ever experienced this? Hope to find conforting words.

Re: Sac only, no yolk nor baby at 5 weeks

  • When I was five weeks, I had an internal u/s due to spotting.  At that time, all they could see was the sac, no yolk or baby.  Then, at later ultrasounds (6 weeks and 7 weeks), we were able to see the sac, yolk, and baby.  A lot can change in a few days!  Hang in there.

  • Really, omgoodness thank you so much. Its soo encouraging to hear this. I was crying soo much thinking that this pregnancy was not going to be viable. I will pray and keep my hopes up that it will all work out for the best and to Gods plan. Thank you again.
  • I spent so much time crying before my follow up u/s.  I totally know how you feel!  I am so sorry you are going through this.

    Praying for you now.

Ditto this exactly with my first.  i freaked out.  This time, I scheduled my firs u/s for 7 weeks 3 days so that there is no confusion.

  • Yeah if you ovulated later than 14 days then even 1 or 2 days would make a HUGE difference so early.

Honestly the only reason to do an u/s in week 5 is to make sure their is a sac in the uterus and the pregnancy is not etopic.

In a few days very likely you will see a sac and yolk & a little bean.

This. I wouldn't be worried at all if you expected to be around 5 weeks and couldn't see much of anything...it would only really be a concern if you were supposed to be like 8 weeks and you measured at 5. I'm sure everything is just fine.

Same thing happened to me (except not due to spotting- I did IVF so they did u/s's at 5 weeks, 6 weeks and 6 weeks, 5 days as the regular course of checking).  At 6 weeks, 5 days they saw the yolk sac, fetal pole and baby.  Don't give up yet!

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.

  • no need to worry... any u/s done @ 5 weeks will only allow you to see the yolk sac... which goes away after a month or so (not sure on time frame)... but just make sure ur hcg levels are rising.. you will be okay :-).. spotting is fairly common... I spotted and freaked out, went to urgent care and all.... just make sure to take it easy, no heavy lifting- try and take ur mind off things... that little baby is growing fast! You should be able to see ur little munchkin in an u/s @ about week 7 or 8.. enjoy! :)
  • A few things:

    It could have implanted late.

With my last pregnancy, I had an u/s at 5w3d and there was a sac... I can't remember if there was a yoke. I honestly don't remember. When we went back at 6w3d, the baby was there, the heart was beating, and everything was fine.

    Good luck, keep us posted.

  • I am in the exact same situation. I had an early u/s at 5w4d and they couldn't see a fetal pole or hb. My bloodwork numbers were all normal, so I'm going back today for another blood draw to see if the numbers are increasing as they should. I've done some more researching and it seems that this is the time when hours and days really do matter, so I'm hoping another u/s in a week or so will show baby and hb. We'll see! Thinking of you!!

  • head up!!

same thing happened to me with this pregnancy. In fact, my doc flat out told me it was a blighted ovum, come back in 4 days to confirm with a blood draw.

Clearly she was wrong. baby stuck- Now I just can't figure out how to get her out of there!! :)

PS- I had spotting until week 16. Nothing is concrete. Every pregnancy is unique.

    best of luck

  • Thank you all for the encouraging words. They have really made me feel better and am obtimistic that this Friday when I see the Dr again and have the US everything will be fine.  I go in tomorrow for another quant. HCG blood draw.  I still feel very much pregnant actually more than before so I guess that is a good sign also. I will post again on Friday with the results of my appointment. Please continue to keep me in mind.
