3rd Trimester

Setting up/opening items

Did you open the items from the packaging right away or are you waiting until LO is born? I've saved all the receipts and any boxes that I have opened but it's hard for me to really open and set everything up from the shower I just had. I hate thinking that something could happen and everything would have to be returned but until LO is here in my arms I just kinda feel that way. Is that silly?? Guess for me, this is kinda too good to be true since I didn't think I'd ever be preggo. Just wondering if I'm the only one waiting.

Re: Setting up/opening items

  • I can totally relate...I had my shower a week ago and we un packaged everything, threw away boxes and washed all the clothes but in the back of my mind I was wondering if I should be so confident and not wait until I have actually delivered a healthy baby.  It's just the pessimistic, nervous side of me coming out and I just reminded myself that the odds of something terrible happening are slim to none so go ahead and enjoy all the unpacking and setting up!

  • Regardless of the superstition, I've found items store better in boxes.  I'm not opening anymore boxes unless I'm absolutely sure I'm going to need them.  I opened my PNP to practice setting it up and now it's a jumbled mess in my closet - there was no way to get it back in the box!

  • It's still early for us, but as we have been receiving things, we've been opening them so that the dogs can get used to them being in the house - how they smell, move, etc. I totally understand the worry, but I think if you want to set them up you should!

  • I opened everything and washed it (because I'm crazy like that..lol) like the Bobby cover, sheets, blankets and stuff but I kept the boxes and packages in the closet. Things that have tags obviously I took off to wash but I'm not worried about having to take anything back. I understand where youre coming from though. I just opened everything because I wanted to wash it all and get it all set up. Good luck figuring it out. hehe
  • I've opened and washed most things, but kept boxes for returning anything based on malfunction or anything like that. There would be sooo much to do after delivery if I didn't have everything set up and ready. That said, I sympathize with your fear but I kinda feel like, at this point, if tragedy were to strike, someone (my mom) would take over clearing out the physical reminders but the emotional pain would be intense either way. Not having the baby stuff around wouldn't erase anything. Plus, preparing everything is a way to keep positive!
  • I was torn between getting set up and leaving everything in boxes and with the tags still on. I am almost 38 weeks with my second baby and I still feel this way. I just washed all of his newborn and 0-3 months clothes but everything else still has the tags. When he comes home and is safe and sound i'll relax and get the rest of the clothes and toys ready. Although I decided to set up his bassinet, crib, etc because I didn't want to be doing that after I bring him home. So don't worry, you're not the only one. And I'm sure everything will be fine.
  • I was really nervous about it but I ended up just doing it. It feels really good to have things all set up and ready for him. I'm glad I did.
  • We've been opening things because we want to make sure nothing is damaged and we want our pets to get used to all of the new stuff gradually.  I'm also very paranoid (and I also didn't think I'd ever get pregnant), but I'm trying to get past the fear and have some fun.  I am terrified of the thought that something could happen and I'm going to have a bunch of baby stuff in our house that we can't use, but (not to be morbid) anything can happen after the baby is born as well and everything will be unpacked at that time so I'm just going to assume everything will be fine.  I definitely understand the "too good to be true" thoughts because they are with me all the time.  I found that once I opened one thing it became a bit easier each time - I think the hardest thing for me was ordering the furniture (which we only did a couple weeks ago).
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • We have opened everything up and set it up.  We don't have room for all of the boxes, so they went out in the trash/recycling.  If LO shows up early, I wanted to be ready, because hubby would have no idea what to do with all of the baby stuff!  We already have all of the clothes, blankets, bedding, hats, socks, etc washed, folded and put away.

  • Well, thanks for the support ladies! I'm gonna start opening and putting away everything. i agree with a pp that if anything were to happen my mom would take care of it all for me anyways...thank God for my mother!

Also, my nursery is completely done with furniture and decor and everything. But, I did keep all the boxes/receipts...just in case. But it was going thru all the shower stuff that really got to me b/c they were all gifts. Good Luck to all of you and here's to all our HEALTHY babies :)
