I went for my first OB visit last weekend and this is my first pregnancy after TTC for more than 2 years. Looking for some some initial check-up and a confirmation that I am really pregnant. From some of the posts I read, some OB gives u/s so that you get to hear your baby's heart beat for the first time. When I requested that from my OB, she said she doesn't really believe in giving u/s so often unless it's necessary. For one, she needs to make sure that I am at least 7 weeks and not 5, or 6 weeks ( I had really inconsistent ovulation cycle before I was pregnant) and second, she said that many kids who now has hearing issues could potentially caused by ultra sound when they were in mom's womb!! ![]()
Re: Ultra sound can potentially cause hearing problem for the baby ?!
My OB never mentioned anything.
I'm surprised your ob mentioned this. The FDA thinks U/S are completly A-OK when done by a professional with experience. They know how to fine tune the machine and not make the sound too loud.
The FDA warns people of getting U/S at the mall or other rinky places because the people there might not know what they're doing and yes that will damage your baby's hearing.
there is a concern about this out there. but there haven't been any conclusive studies connecting multiple u/s with hearing loss or development.
i would say your dr is being on the safe side, and if there is no need for an u/s, why do one. sounds fine to me.
How can they determine that the said hearing loss is from U/S's?
My OB has never said such a thing and I get one a visit.

I trust my health care providers to know how/when to safely perform medical procedures.
You may have good intentions in posting this, but these kinds of posts tend to create needless alarm.

If you're interested, here's a link to the study I remember on this. This is the only thing I've ever seen. Like I said, not a lot to go on:

When I got my u/s I asked if we would hear the h/b (this was at 7 weeks). The tech said it is somewhat controversial at that early of a stage to "hear" it because it could cause harm. So, we were able to "see" it on the u/s screen, but not hear it. I won't get that until later when it is safer for the baby.
