Working Moms

Question about insurance

So my DH doesnt have a job right now so I am going to be using my employee insurance which doesn't start til March 1st. My question is, If I'm going to quit once I have the baby, do I need to "pretend" I'll be returning after maternity leave to continue to get my insurance for the actual birth? Has any other mom had to deal with this? Any advise would be great since this is my first pregnancy.

Re: Question about insurance

  • You can "pretend" all you want the fact is if you don't go back to work you will have to repay the insurance for what they pay while you're out on "Maternity Leave".

  • Your dh doesn't have a job and you are quiting when the baby arrives?  I hope he finds one before your LO gets here!

  • This is one of the reasons working moms have a bad rep.  Seems to me you have an ethical problem more than a financial one.

  • You need to check with your HR dept. what happens if you don't return - some companies will make you repay the full premiums for insurance as well as any pay you received from them.  Also, if you quit after the baby is born - does that mean - you, DH and baby will have no health insurance?  That seems very dangerous and expensive - especially with a newborn.

  • I would highly recommend that you be upfront and honest with your employer. It sounds like your employer would pay your premiums (or at least their portion) while you are off on maternity leave if you are planning on returning? If you don't return from leave they will bill you for what they paid and most likely cancel your coverage retro active back to your last day worked if you don't pay, which they have every right to do.  You are not going to gain anything by being dishonest here.

  • I wish that we could vote women like you off of our team.  You make us all look bad.

Many companies will not only require that you pay back all of the benefits that they paid out for you while you were on "leave", but will also retroactively go back and consider your last day at work before "leave" your very final last day and cancel your benefits starting then...........meaning that you will be responsible for all of your medical bills after that date.

You know, like your labor and delivery bills.

  • Our policy is that you have to repay all the benefits back that you receive when you are on leave if you do not return when your leave is over.

I'm going to second all the pps, that this is a terrible idea, both for you -- what if you ever want to go back or get back in the workforce and your current employer says you are not eligible for rehire because of this -- and for working women everywhere.

  • WOW!! I am sorry you guys all feel like i'm a sorry excuse for a woman. I'm glad everyone's SO supportive. I am not trying to screw my company over. my maternity leave is unpaid and I wasn't sure how it worked if I just quit 2 wks before my due date, then I would instantly be without insurance and couldn't see my dr? My DH is looking for a job since we recently moved back to CA and I am not going to quit unless and when he finds one. I did not mean for this post to come off as me trying to get stuff for free, this is my first child and I have never had insurance through my employeer , it's always been through my DH when he was in the Navy.

I'm glad you guys love to jump on the band wagon of making me feel like crap when I thought this was a place to come and ask questions without being instantly judged? Thanks again ladies for the lovely welcome to ur "working moms" board!

If you quit, you can pay Cobra rates at 100% of the cost, but you cannot be denied coverage (up to 18 months).  Most employers do not go back and try to back date the cancellation of benefits if you do not return from leave, so you will probably not have an issue, however I would verify your options with your HR dept. At the end of the day it comes down to what to your morals are, if you can live with lying while knowing you're coming back - have at it. As for your comment on the working moms board - maybe you should have posted this elsewhere - we are working, you will not be.
