Working Moms

Sometimes an interview

is all you need to run screaming back to your current job, warts and all.  My job is by no means perfect and the company gets scarier and screwier by the day.  But the job I interviewed for today -- holy cow.  It's a pressure cooker.  Expected -- 3000 hours a year.  A working mom of two told me how easy her schedule was -- getting up and doing 1-2 hours work before the kids got up, getting in between 8-9, leaving between 5-6, closer to 5 if she worked through lunch and some weekend work.  No telecommuting.  Face time required.  Whereas I have an inordinate amount of flexibility with my current job and did with my last one too.  Telecommuting -- no problem!  I was just trusted to get my work done.

I found that my time with my family and the flexibility I enjoy to help with my parenting duties is worth more than a 20% pay raise and huge bonus.

  • aaaaaaaaaahhhhh, i would go running too, i don't blame you!!!!

more money is a big "nice" but nothing replaces flexability with little ones and having "face time" with your kids.

  • Yikes.  It makes you appreciate what you've got, doesn't it?

I'd have run for the hills too.

  • OMG - I would have run back and hugged my boss (figuratively speaking of course)!

  • That is exactly why I had to leave my old job when DD was 7 m.o., and take a lower paying job.  The big money would have been nice, but seeing my kids is much better.
  • Eek!  That sounds terrible, especially compared to where you are now.  You can't beat being trusted to do your job without putting in unnecessary face time.  Face time is for the birds.
