Working Moms

need help with wording

I am interviewing within my current company ... I have already discussed this with my boss.  She knows that I am going for this new position because it is more flexible - more family friendly - and plays on my strengths.

The position I am going for is considered entry level - and less pay.  However it does allow me to work from home - travel and work independently - and somewhat of summers off ... as I would only travel during the school year.  I really want this job.

So my question is what do I say when they ask me why I am leaving my higher up/higher paying job?  I know I will say because I want to travel and the position plays on my strengths more than my current position.  However I am afraid that when the girl hiring talks to my boss for a recommendation that my boss will say I am doing this for a better fit for my family.  I know some employers dont take this well ... like I will not be as commited to my job because I value my family - does that make sense?  I know my boss will give me a good recommendation otherwise.

I am thinking of not even bringing the family bit up ... just using what I already mentioned above.  Any advice/guidance would be much appreciated!

Re: need help with wording

  • I know what you mean.  You are right on about using "travel and your strengths" as your main reasons.  How long have you been at your current position?  Maybe that would justify the reason; like you've been hoping for a position such as this within your company.  If anything the flexibility of this new position allows you to be more dedicated to your job.  I think you will get a feel from your interviewers if mentioning family or not is a good thing.  You'll do fine!  GL!
