Just finished our child chirthing class and learned about a way to relieve pain without using pain medicine. Its called sterile water injection. The nurse makes 4 small injections into the lower back (just under the skin) with strile water. I was told it stings for about a minute or so, like a wasp sting and looks like a TB skin test afterwards. Anyway, after that's done, you brain is told that there's more things going on down in your lower back area and some how the pain switch is turned off. I heard that it really does work, and involves no pain meds. Thought that was interesting and wondered if any of you had heard about it?
Re: Have you heard of this for labor pains?
never heard of it.
ETA: if you google, a bunch of stuff comes up. it looks like it was tried/studied in the early 90's and was primarily effective for relief of back labor pain, not regular contrax.
The nurse in our prenatal classes also mentioned this. Since I'm allergic to most of the pain medications they'd give you and I'm wanting to hold off as long as possible on an epidural, she suggested this instead. She said it wasn't common but she had seen it used as a method of pain relief.
