1st Trimester

interesting baby shower...

I went to a baby shower for a friend that was supposed to start at 3:00. I got there at about 2:40 and they started almost right away. They had a table with veggies, finger sandwiches, chips for people to grab as they walked in.

There were NO games played, as soon as it started she immediately started opening presents, and then it was done. People started leaving right after that and the cake wasn't even served til over half the people were already gone. I ended up leaving there at 3:20.

That was the quickest and weirdest baby shower I've been to... what do you think?

  • sounds good to me, lol. I don't really enjoy showers of any sort.

  • Definitely short and not exactly sweet, but to each her own, right?  Maybe she didn't like games, or maybe the people throwing the shower hadn't been to one in years, were frazzled and couldn't remember how it worked.
  • That screams, "I really just want your presents!"  Even if you arent a fan of showers you should make an attempt to be social and seem appreciative

oh she was very appreciative, and did make her way around afterwards which was very nice. I just thought it was weird still.

  • I really do not like showers where present opening is the only activity.
  • no games is WONDERFUL. We never do games. Ever.

But ours still last a long time because people hang out. They are more like cocktail parties (food, drinks, conversation)

  • wow that's weird! I've been to many showers that were waaaaay too long but never to one that was way too short.
  • thats how my sister's shower was. There were lots of people there and it took her about an hr. to open all of her gifts. It was boring..but not everyone wants to play games at showers.

  • There were no games at my baby shower - but it latest much longer than the one you described.

We had food and mingled - then I opened presents and mingled some more.  I forget when the cake was served.  Maybe after presents?

  • Sounds awesome!  I banned games from my shower.  I hate, hate, hate them.  I prefer a more casual party-like gathering with good food and chat! (And alcohol for the non-pregsters)
  • I really hope there aren't games at my baby shower, but I'm sure there will be.

I had two wedding showers.  My MIL threw one and insisted on there not being games.  It was held at a hotel and we all ate a really nice lunch, sat around and talked, and opened presents.  My husband was there too.

My other wedding shower was my dad's side of the family and there were games.  Thankfully though, there was nothing too embarrassing or weird.

So I'm sure I have games to expect at my dad's side of the family again.  But even at a shower without games, it should never be that short.  It just seems like a waste of the guests' time, especially if they came from out of town!

This exactly, we didn't have any games and I much preferred it that way, plus we also did a couples shower so it was like a cocktail party, everyone came and hung out and the girls opened presents towards the end, but it was more for DH and I instead of a shower just for me. If I had to choose again I would have it done the same way in a heartbeat.

  • That sounds really odd.  I opted out of games at my shower but present opening was waaay at the end after everyone had eaten and mingled.  On the other hand though, I have thrown a couple of baby showers for friends and my SIL and they both wanted games and to be honest - their showers were A LOT more fun.  We also did things like decorate onesies and burp cloths with fabric paint.  People seemed to really enjoy it.
  • Sounds good to me.   I am not a fan of shower games at all.    The most recent shower I went to lasted almost 3.5 hrs.   The mother-to-be didn't get there until almost 45 minutes into it.  They played some silly games...I just wanted her to open the presents so we could leave.  Sounds terrible but it was in the summer on a busy Saturday & I had a bunch of things to do.

  • Sounds awesome!  Since I got engaged, we instituted a "NO GAMES" policy at any family showers, and you cannot imagine how many people have thanked us!  Plus, Saturdays and Sundays are usually so packed, we make all family parties (birthday parties, showers, etc) all drop-in type things, and that way no one is pressured to be somewhere at a certain time or to stay very long if they have other commitments.  To each her own, though.  This works for my fam, but some might find us odd (we embrace our strangeness, lol).  Mainly we just like getting together and catching up!  (oh, and the food....the FOOD!)
