cyst on baby's brain

Me and my husband just had our 19 week ultra sound finding out that its a girl! What also came with the ultra sound was finding out that they found one cyst on her brain. Now the doctor said not to worry which helped me calm down but i just would like more info on this damn cyst and what could have happened for it to develop and what i can do to make it go away! and prevent more..any tips or info? Greatly appreciate it!

 thanks,

Re: cyst on baby's brain

  • Hi.

My sister went through the same thing and we were all freaked out. We went to a specialist at a childrens hospital just to make sure (only because she was a high risk pregnancy with her first baby). By the time we went for the second ultrasound to look for it, it was gone alrady and the dr there said brain cysts are more common than you would realize and they usually disappear before birth and are no concern.

  • Don't know anything about this.  Just wanted to say good luck, and don't stress too much!  I went crazy on the internet when I found out that DD will have a hand deformation.  There's so much info out there that won't pertain to you....just make you more scared and nervous!  Hope everything works out!

  • K has a cyst on her brain.  We didn't know until she was 6 months old- a brain scan is standard operating procedure after open-heart surgery.  They said it was no big deal, they're very common, and it won't cause her any problems in the future.  I haven't thought about it since.

Most cysts found by U/S go away later on in the pregnancy- if they checked again at like 30 weeks it would probably be gone.

  • We went through this a few weeks ago.  We did not choose to do the quad screen when they first asked us but after they found the cyst we asked them to do it.  It came back negative and they sent us to the specialist and the cyst was gone.  It is a very stressful experience and I'm sorry you have to go through this but just know it is common and most often nothing.  In most cases it goes away on it's own in the womb or remains but does not cause any set backs to your child.  In very rare cases it can be a sign of Trisomy 18 which is serious.  Trisomy 18 has other physical signs that my Dr. said they would have noticed already.  You and your baby are in my prayers but try not to stress as the cyst most likely will be gone when you go to have it checked again.
  • Our baby has bilateral choroid plexus cysts on the brain (found on 20 week u/s).  Besides being an associated marker for trisomies, namely 18, even more rarely 21, they are benign.  They are located in an area of the brain that does not effect function or personality or any other good stuff.  And as pp said, they most often go away.  As long as there are no other markers for any of the Trisomies (limb, heart, intestinal anomalies), as well as a low risk quad screen, they really are a variant of normal.  I work in the medical field and the rational, educated part of me was saying to not be worried (because all of the other stuff looked great), but the mommy side of me was "cyst + brain = bad".  We go for our follow up u/s Monday, so hopefully they are gone!

So, in short, try not to worry, but it's easier said than done, I know....good luck!

  • They found a Choroid Plexus cyst on out babys brain too. The tech and radiologist told us not to freak out but I have to admit I did for the first few days. I was even having bad dreams about it. I dont worry much now because worrying wont help anything. I have a follow up u/s in a few weeks. My MW said they are usually gone by the 30th week. Good luck.

Also, dont google anything about it.  It sets you into a panic. Just wait until they order the follow up before seeing if there is a need to panic or worry.

  • thanks again the ultrasound tech checked to see if she had downs and said she did not have the signs, i havent been too worried about it because the doctor said not to worry but i wanted to see what you ladies thought! thanks again! will write again hope it goes and stays away
