2nd Trimester

N/T scan on Monday

We have our N/T scan on Monday and I am not sure what to expect.  Were they able to tell you right away if everything was ok?  How long does it take for them to be able to take the measurements?  Did you meet with a genetic counselor first?

I also hear that we may be able to find out gender.  Were you able to?

I thought I would ask here because it happens so late in the first trimester that I am not sure if any of them have even had the scan.

TIA!

Re: N/T scan on Monday

  • They will not tell you anything right away. Techs arent allowed anyway. The report will be looked at my a Dr,. but your blood samples will need to be sent out (to a genetic lab) for testing. WIthin a week you should get a call or letter from the dr/hospital with your results. We did not see a counselor, just a tech,.

Its pretty quick - 20-30 mins for the u/s, 5 mins for the blood draw (a few finger pricks).  They take a few measurements, the most important being the fold in the back of baby's neck,

Our tech would not even guess on the gender, she wasnt allowed.

  • Ours was a good experience.

We met with a genetic counselor first who asked a lot of questions about family history and ethnicity.  She also talked to us about how we would feel about the different results we could get.

Our LO wouldn't cooperate so we got a nice 45 min. u/s and they finally were able to measure the back of LO's neck.  Then I went for blood work.  We found out the next day.

I was 12 weeks but we weren't able to find out the gender.

  • My OB didn't have us meet with a counselor. We went into the U/S room, the tech did her measurements, she said everything looked good and gave us the measurement of the skin fold - LO was at 1.3 and they wanted it under 3.0. I immediately had bloodwork done and that was it.

The u/s lasted about 15-20 minutes. They will not be able to tell the gender - genitalia doesn't form until usually 14 weeks.
  • It didn't last very long - 10 mins maybe.  It was an external u/s.  The doctor was able to tell us that the NT measurements looked fine right when she looked at them, but I don't know if they all do that.  We didn't meet with a genetic counselor, so not sure about that.  NT scan is not diagnostic, just a screening test.  In most cases it would be too early to get a good look at the gender.
  • We got a long u/s 45min+ since baby wasn't cooperating.  The woman that did it was very sweet, printed lots of pictures for us, and explained most of what we were seeing.  I made a point to pay attention to the measurements she was taking because she reminded us we wouldn't have the results until the blood work came back.  She did make a guess at the gender since we asked, but reminded us not to go shopping just yet(even though she was right)!  Have fun!  We really enjoyed getting to see LO flop around and looking like an actual baby.

  • When I went for mine, the tech told us that everything looked good on the scan, but that the doctor would review everything and speak to us at our next appointment which happened to be 2 days later.  At 12 weeks we were unable to find out the sex, the earliest I've heard of people finding out the sex is 15 weeks so I wouldn't hold out hope for that.  Then they sent me to the hospital to have blood work done and I got the results at my monthly appt. the following week.  I just went this week for the second part of the bloodwork this week, but everything looks good so far so I'm sure everything is fine.  Good luck!
