What have you heard is the standard pay bump

to make a move to another job?  IOW, how much higher does the salary have to be to make it worth the cost of jumping into the unknown?

I've heard 15%, 20% and 30%.  Just wondering because I have an interview on Monday for another gig and I was thinking there was no way I was moving for less than 20% (pay is okay here and I have a lot of flexibility) and I've been told I'm thinking too high and too low.  I don't think it alters my thinking but curious what you all have heard the "norm" is.  TIA!!

Re: What have you heard is the standard pay bump

  • This depends on so many things I could never make a generalization.  For me it depends on my satisfaction with my current job, the commute time, the vacation and benefits offered, etc.  My last job change was only about an 8% increase, but it decreased my commute from an hour in the car to 15 minutes on the bus, so to me it was totally worth it.

  • Mine have generally been 15-20%.

Lately I've seen co-workers moving for 10%, just for a new challenge, since there aren't that many opportunities out there right now.

  • I think it depends on you.  How much do you like your current job, how much better/worse would the new job be, hours, commute, etc?  To me all of those things play a role.  2 years ago I switched for 32% more, a much shorter commute and less hours with the potential to WFH and now I work for the same company from home PT.
  • I would need to look at job stability as well.  If they pay you X% more than your current job, but you're twice as likely to be laid off, where does that leave you?
  • I have no idea.  I can tell you that I took a 25% pay CUT for much better hours and happiness.  So, question is - will your life improve in other ways?  I make less $$ but I am a much happier person.

I would do a move like this.

  • I moved jobs for the same salary because of greater flexibility including working from home.  The amount of money wouldn't impact my decision very much unless I was struggling to make ends meet - its about what the job is and other perks offered.
