Preference, I think. As far as it goes, in the children's stories I'm pretty sure it's pronounced like Caroline (you can tell by what it rhymed with).
Had to look it up...
ETA: In an old house in Paris that was
covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.
They left the house at half-past nine in two straight lines, in rain or
shine, The smallest one was madeline.
We are considering the name Addalyn. I preferred it spelled Adeline, but my best friend who is a 5th grade teacher warned me that it would be pronounced Ade-LINE not Ade-Lynn. Just my 2 cents! HTH
In America it's usually -lynn. But in my fav story about the little french girl it's -line. Like pp said, your preference. btw Caroline is also pronounced both ways.
I was also thinking about this name. I would have pronounced it -lynn but then my MIL and my mom both said -line, if I wanted -lynn I needed to spell it Madelyn. I think this spelling only recently became popular and I definately prefer the -line spelling. Ultimately, I think it goes either way and is your preference.

It could be either or spelled that way. I know that does not help you. LOL

Both Madeline & Caroline could be pronounced "lynn" or "line".
Typically, I pronounce them both "lynn".
