Running while pregnant

Anyone here continued running for most or all of their pregnancy?

I haven't run in about 4 months, but would like to start again. I will get to the dr. and ask them but was curious if anyone had done this without problems.

Charlotte from Sex and the City did it, so it must be possible! ha ha!

Re: Running while pregnant

  • I've continued with my running; but I ran really regularly before. My doctor knows...I'm training for a half marathon and she said as long as I feel good and pay attention to your body more. Pretty much as long as you did it before, you can continue to do it, provided you have a fairly low risk pregnancy!! Enjoy your runs!

  • I've continued running as well, but I don't feel like it every day and my energy levels leave me running a slower than I use to. I basically have decided to do whatever exercise I feel like and if I don't feel up to it than I don't.

I think as long as you listen to your body you are fine.

Although, I think not running for 4 months and now wanting to start up again, would be a bit much.

  • I asked my dr.  and he said I could do it and to just listen to my body, I also took a break from running so, not I do just light jogging, for example if running on the treadmill I used to run at 8.0 now I just stay at 5or 4.5 .  But I would just say like everyone else to listen to your body. Have fun!
  • I'm a runner...well...was a runner before an injury sidelined me for a few months prior to my pregnancy. At the time I saw my doctor, I hadn't run for about 3 months. My doctor told me that it wouldn't be a good idea to start again up right now...so I've been walking. Unless you've been doing some really good cross training in the interim, your cardio and muscles are not what they were. I think the bottom line is that you don't want to overheat, so if you can run and have a conversation right now, then maybe you're okay. But, I can't because I took too much time off. I'm really frustrated about it...I'd start off with fast walking maybe with an incline and see how it goes.

  • I'm still running about 20-30 miles/week.  I was running beforehand, but not training for anything specific.  I was getting ready to START training for 3 spring marathons, an Ironman in August and various other small triathlons, though.  Right now I run 4-5 times/week, cycle 2-3 times and swim 3 times.  It's all about health now, not training, so I've scaled back the intensity a lot and am just enjoying my slower running pace.  I plan on continuing throughout the entire pregnancy, realizing that it may not happen.

Just take it easy and use common sense. i.e. don't run if it hurts, you're overheating or you're gasping for air.

  • I've been running since I got my BFP.  I had just run a half marathon a few weeks before my BFP and was planning to start training on January 1st for my next marathon in April.  At first my heartrate was skyrocketing, even though I was a consistent runner before I got my BFP, so I took it down a notch.  Now my heartrate is lower and I feel comfortable running.  I'm down in mileage and speed considerably, but I'm glad I can still do it.  I've also kept up swimming and have been hitting the pool at least 3 times a week.  I find that to be great exercise when I can't get up the energy to run.
