Newborn Vitamins

At Leah's last office visit we were still supplimenting and the ped said that we would need to add vitamins if I were only bf-ing...but since she was getting some formula she didn't need it. I pointed out that exclusive bf-ing was my goal...so if I get there or only give her 1 bottle a day...how much do I give her. And he basically brushed off the question hinting that that probably wasn't going to happen and said any breastmilk I can give her is great...but formula is just as good too. It was weird.

Anyway...I am bf-ing and only offering her formula at the last feeding before we go to bed. She takes anywhere from 1-3oz. So should I still give her vitamins? We bought tri-vi-sol (as the ped suggested) buy I don't really want to give her the full amount since she still takes some formula.

Any thoughts?

Re: Newborn Vitamins

  • Starting at two weeks old DD got 0.5ml, or half a dropper of tri-vi-sol, per our pedi.

BTW, your siggy pic is precious!  They are both adorable!

  • I am pretty sure the vitamins are really unnecessary, whether or not you are exclusively BFing.. Our originaly pedi told us we needed them too, but we tried them once and Eve spit them all over the place cuz they taste and smell nasty..so I looked into it, and more or less its a myth that they need them.. You just need to keep taking your prenatals.

  • I had a sleep deprived freak-out moment regarding vitamin drops when G was really little and all I can tell you for sure is the 1-800 was pretty useless.  I know the box says you can mix the drops with formula though right?

Kind of weird about the peds reaction to BF- I'm assuming you switched out of Amherst Peds already- otherwise I'd say their LC might have some additional insight on dosage that the doctor didn't.

No - we're still there...it was one of the peds there. Actually, he was the one that gave me "lactation tips" with Evan that I think contributed to me not being able to bf him for long because my supply was crap.

Maybe I'll call Karen, she actually called here last week just to see how we were doing (and to follow up on how Leah's tongue tie snipping went) I really liked her...we met with Joan with Evan and she didn't really help us too much (prob because she isn't an actual LC)

  • We switched doctors while in Ohio, and then moved here, so Gav's had 3 different pedis and all 3 have told us to use the vitamins.  We didn't start until he was 2 months though.

    I love Karen!  She's awesome :)

I looked and the literature I had was drops were for infants that get less than 17 oz of formula.

  • That's so weird because we were told the opposite. Our Dr. told us that as long as I'm EBF that we didn't need to give them to her. Maybe call and ask a pharmacist, they are usually knowledge on all of that stuff.

Yeah, our pedi said no vitamins for babies.  Well, not needed any way.  They didn't say not to.

  • Our pedi said they were not needed.  She said they just recommend the trivosol for babies that may not be exposed to some sunlight.

  • The only vitamin that BF babies may need supplemented is the vitamin d. The vitamin drops have others as well, but not necessarily needed.   And that is just because while vitamin d does go thru the breast milk, a lot of people (esp around here!) are deficient in vitamin d, so the baby is not getting as much vitamin d.  BUT tons of babies get no vitamins and are fine too.
