My sister's newborn had a stroke, she was born on Monday. They don't know if it was in utero or not, but she had a pretty severe stroke on her left side and a small one on her right. I looked at your blog, which I was directed to by some nesties on 3rd tri. They said Avery had a stroke in utero and I wanted to know all of the details if possible. you can contact me, please, at
bella4w@hotmail.com anytime. I know that your daughter is doing well and I have high hopes that my beautiful niece can do well, too. If you don't feel like writing everything out, just point me to a spot in your blog that may have info about your daughter, what you've all been through as a family and how severe her stroke was and also where her stroke was. Thank you so much! my family doesnt know what to expect. i know all cases are different but what we were told today by docs gives me hope that this baby can live a normal or almost normal life. im glad your daughter is doing so well.
Re: paging, Sarah, Avery's mom, I need to talk to you please.
I am so sorry to hear about your niece. Getting that news is so scary, BUT be so thankful the doctors caught it early and know now. We didn't find out about Avery's stroke until she was 11 months old. Make sure your sister gets her involved in therapy right away (occupational therapy, physical therapy, and eventually speech therapy).
Avery's stroke was on the left side of her brain, so her right side is affected. (We have had two different opinions from doctors on when exactly it happened, some say 12ish weeks and some say 30ish weeks, but either way 3/8 of her brain is damaged/missing.) But since we started therapy at 9 months (we started therapy before we got the stroke diagnosis because we knew SOMETHING wasn't right), she's very close to "normal" at almost 4 years old.
I could go on and on about things, but there's a lot of information on my blog if you look at the July entries from the beginning (https://babystrokesteps.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html). You can also go to the top of my blog page and use the Search function to search all my posts for the word "stroke" and find a bunch of stuff that way. There's lots of info about the tests she's had (blood work, MRA, MRI, EEG, EKG, etc) and all that.
I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me on my blog or at tosa28 @ hotmail . com. Hang in there and know that there are a lot of resources and people in the exact same position to help and offer support. And there's LOTS of hope for your niece who can live a fantastic life!
P.S. Are you all in Italy, or just you? There was a great piece on childhood stroke in the New York Times last week and they just did a segment on the Today Show this week. Check it out if you can: https://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/35064207/ns/today-the_new_york_times/. Also beware of some "support" groups online; there are a few I know of that are fundraising for pediatric stroke "research," but there is very little (if any) private research that is being done on this sort of thing. They seem like scam artists to me. Stick to places like the American Heart Association, the Stroke Association, etc.
