RP: If your child has to nap at daycare but he's done napping...

How  well do they sleep at home? I've basically decided that DS is done napping (sigh) because he is awake until 9, 10, 11 p.m. Yes, I've read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, and no, it's not an overtiredness thing.

Anyway, he's been going better at home since we eliminated the nap, but the two days he still has to nap because of childcare, he's still awake at 10! I need to be asleep then because I have a two-month old who gets up still 2 times/night.

Has this happened to you and how did you handle it?

TIA!

  • can the daycare provide some sort of quiet time instead? ?I teach kindergarten and all the kids "rest", but a few really need twenty or thirty minutes to sleep. ?Maybe your son could look at books for a while indtead of sleep? Or maybe they could wake him up after twenty minutes? What have they said if you've brought this up before?
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Our daycare does not make the children nap but have quiet time instead.  If our son does not want to nap or need to nap he is allowed to lay in another room and have quiet time.  He does not need to be there the entire time the other children are napping and sometimes only rests for a half hour.  Talk to your provider about this.
  • For us, it was kind of easy b/c DS refused to nap there.  So, he just had to lie down for quiet time.  Now he doesn't even lie down, he's allowed to play quietly in another area.

  • At my daycare, they want all the kids to lay down for a bit but they don't have to sleep.  They then set up a corner away from the kids that are napping with quiet toys such as books and coloring.  We have daycare waking my older DD after 1 hour for the same reason as you mention but she often doesn't nap at all. We do quiet time at home at naptime since my younger DD naps and for that she has to stay in her room and can read and play quietly so she is used to the routine.

  • Extended care at DD's preschool is in two rooms. The kids who nap do that in one room, and the other kids go in a separate room.

FWIW, she's up till 9, 10, 11 pm too. But on Sunday, we were out and she missed her nap, and she was a total crank in the evening (complete meltdown at dinner)... so even though she did fall asleep by 8pm that night, I think we're going to stick with the nap.
