Help with m/s - any remedies?

I actually have all day sickness LOL - of course! I have been worse in the evening though. Basically I have done ginger ale, pretzels, saltines and sucking on lifesavers for snacks, and then I can get down most meals (as long as there are no fruits/vegs involved unfortunately),  but I am uneasy and shaky in the tummy area. Plus it seems to be coupled with a headache. Thankfully no heaving, but sometimes I feel close. I also have a ravenous appetite so it has been hard finding suitable foods.

If you have more food options that have worked for you, please share!

Also, I have searched high and low for Lemonheads but can't find them - where are they readily available?

 Thanks!
Jen

Re: Help with m/s - any remedies?

  • In my area Walgreens has Lemonheads.  Both in theater candy boxes and in larger bags.
  • Loading the player...
  • sour patch kids

call the doc and get some zofran.  the stuff's amazing.

  • As far as the ginger goes - I've heard sucking on ginger root helps.  Some ginger ales don't even have ginger in them (Schwepps doesn't, Canada Dry does), so they may not help as much as you'd think.  I hope you find something that works for you!

  • I have it all day, too.  It seems to come in waves.  I like eating baby carrots and taking little sips of lemonade.  I also make my own ginger ale.  You peel ginger root and slice it into a couple cups of water and boil it, strain out the ginger and add it to simple syrup (1cup sugar/ 1cup water heated until sugar is dissolved) and fizzy water.
  • I just bought Lemon Heads at Walmart today.

  • don't know where you can find lemonheads, but i've done well with Gin-Gins ginger hard candies & Ginger Chews. both are made by a co. called Ginger People. i find them in the natural/organic area of our grocery store.

this pg, when nothing else will stay down, i can count on Edy's lime popsicles. ironic since last pg i could no do any citrus at all until after 5 mo.

i understand you're asking for food options, but as someone who had hyperemesis w/ 1st pg, i would encourage you to be open to OTC and rx options for controlling nausea/vomiting. 1st pg, i was totally against the idea of meds and ended up in the hospital getting IVs. after that it was phenergan for me & dd came out perfectly healthy.

this time, i got on top of the n/v right away w/ unisom & b6. has worked great for me, but got a rx for phenergan just in case.

good luck to you - and hope you find something that works!

  • this is my remedy and it works ( for me and some other moms )

Drink flat gingerale ( as soon as you wake up ) dont get out of bed for about 5-10 min. nibble on a saltine or two

Suck on jolly ranchers ( i never waster money on preggie pops ) when you feel the mood strikes you ( aka m/s )

Use Sea bands ( some say they dont work but they are a miracle worker for me and im 10 weeks and still using them ) you can buy them at walmart or any other store

    Eat saltines

Always eat snacky food ( snack all day)

in the morning i would drink hot decaf tea and dry cheerios

    HTH!! GL!

  • Thank you for these suggestions. I am going to give them a try! You ladies are great : )
  • Definitely talk to your dr about getting a prescription and as for foods that seemed to agree with me.  Bagels, oatmeal, flat sprite, peppermint candies, and lemonade.  The meds really helped though.  good luck hope you find something that works well.
  • I read somewhere that Gatoride "Glacier" flavor works, and that's what I've been trying for the past few days and it seems to really help too. Oh, and the saltines!

  • I had m/s really bad into second tri. Try the SeaBands, they're like little wrist bands with acupressure points on them. They seemed to help a little bit.  I was told that pregnancy pops would help too, but I never got to try them. Really though, I didn't find anything that really helped, but I hope that you do and you get relief!

To help your headache, drink a coke and take some tylenol.  I was waaay against caffine when I was pg with W, but after being stuck in bed with terrible headaches, the nurse suggested this.  It helped immensely.

Ginger chews and sour sprees helped me too.

  • i have all day sickness too. i've been having a lot of jamba juice, actually every morning.
  • OMG dear, I feel your pain.  I have had awful m/s since 6w.

Here is what I have tried and has/has not worked:

Medicines: Zofran (made me so constipated I didn't poop for 6 days), Reglan (interacted with my Zoloft and made me MORE nauseated).  Phenergan has been my savior...I take it every day, 2-3x/day.

Foods: bagels, cereal, pop-tarts, cottage cheese, pasta.  I try to stay away from extra acidic foods and super greasy things, they make me very sick the next morning.  I also try to work in a lot of protein (peanut butter during the day, chicken at night)

And no matter what, if nothing is working, just call your doctor and you can work something out together.  There is no reason you should have to suffer.
