Help..How to get antibiotics down!!!!

My little guy has pneumonia..thank god I took him to the dr. for his 4 day cough. Anyway, they prescribed him 5ml. of antibiotics 4 times a day. He hates it and spits it out. Any suggestions, I have to get it down him!! ( Also, I am BF so I can mix it w formula)

  • C had this for 10 months so I feel your pain! I mixed it in applesauce. Mix it in a small amount of favorite food or put in bottle.

  • Can you try to put the meds in a nipple to see if he will suck it down that way?   I also put little doses in the side of my DS's mouth by putting the dropper at an angle.  That way he can swallow and not spit it out.

  • We have to give DD reflux medicine twice a day which she hates. We have found the best thing to do is angle the dropper/syringe so it squirts in her  cheek rather than just in her mouth. It makes it more difficult to spit out.
  • I give lauryn medicine every morning.  For her, I put the dropper into the corner of her mouth and leave it in there as I slowly dispense the medicine.  For Ava, I had to keep putting the dropper in and out of her mouth.  Try both. But mixing it with food, also sounded like a good idea.

  • DS is awful with medicine.  We've found that the easiest way is to put it in a dropper.  With DH holding him down, I have to use my finger like a tongue depressor, stick the dropper as far into his mouth as I can get it and then release just a little bit at a time so he doesn't choke on it.

This is the only way we can get him to take it.  We once tried putting it in a bottle and he refused it and continued to refuse that specific bottle for DAYS afterward.

  • Yeah, I was going to suggest putting it in food too. Otherwise, lay him down and put it in the corner of his mouth and slowly dispense it. DD wouldn't take her vitamins sitting up, but if I laid her down she took it much easier.

  • Can you try putting in yogurt?  The yogurt will help with the upset stomach and diarrhea that antibiotics can cause and it will mask the taste of the meds.

  • Our DS doesn't ever get to watch TV, so we discovered when he hated taking antibiotics that if we turned the TV on and put him in front of it, he would slurp them right down while he was distracted. Not sure if that would work for your LO...
