Talk to me about snacks

I know I really need to start giving my kids snacks during the day but I'm dreading it.  I already feel like I spend most of my day preparing for and recovering from meals.  Now we have to add snacks to the mix??  Argh.

I really, really do not want to give them food outside of the kitchen.  So tell me, oh wise mommies, what is your advice?  If you don't let them wander with food, what do you do?  Do you put them in high chairs for snacks?  What kind of stuff do you give for snacks besides cheese sticks?  I need guidance.  *sigh*

Re: Talk to me about snacks

  • We only give Hayden snacks once a day (when we are eating dinner) and we only give them in his high chair. He gets puffs, cherrios, yogurt melts, pieces of bananna, and diced chicken. He doesn't get all of this at the same time but those are the only ones we have tried so far.

  • I don't have much advice - my guys are still in the puffy and cheerioes stage for "snacks" and we do yogurt sometimes, but I hear ya on the not wanting them to walk around with food.  I would say yes, that their snakc time should be in teh high chair.  That's what we do.

  • I think snacks are the easiest part about solids.  I probably give them too often though, lol.  I give him Mum-Mums, Cheerios, and BeechNut Let's Grow Banana Cookies.  But that's about it cause he can't have dairy or soy.  I'd love to give him cheese!

eta:  I give them mostly when we're out and about.  Cause it's usually when it's in between meals.  He'll eat them while in his stroller.

  • I don't do messy snacks.

Snacks for us at home = puffs, cherios, raisins, crackers. I put them in a little snack cup (with the cover where you have to put your hand it to get them out) and do let him wonder around the house. The snack cup contains the mess, but I won't lie to you -- some stuff does come out.

At school they do fruit for snacks too, but they eat at the tables.

Yep, snacks are in their high chairs.  We'll do puffs, mum-mums, animal crackers, cheerios/kix, edamame, cheese, grapes, blueberries, freeze dried fruit, yogurt melts, gold fish, graham crackers, or pretty much anything I have in the fridge that doesn't make too much of a mess.

  • We allow snacks outside of the highchair.  Just too challenging to put her in there 5 times a day (meals and snacks.)  She has a small play table and chairs that she gets snacks at.  Usually fruit or grains (crackers or healthy cookies.)  Sometimes veggies too, she loves baby carrots (cooked.)
